Battlefield 3 is 'fastest-selling EA game ever'

5 million sold globally in the first week, estimates EA

EA has declared Battlefield 3 "the fastest-selling game in EA's history" as it "estimates" 5 million global sales in the first week.

"Battlefield 3 has sold through five million units in the first week globally, making it the fastest-selling game in EA's history," said the publisher in a gloating press release today.

It goes on to say that gamers have "logged-on in unprecedented numbers" and that the servers handled the load. "Servers and service uptime stabilized to roughly 98.9% throughout the weekend," it said.

"We are overwhelmed by the global response to Battlefield 3," said Patrick Soderlund, exec VP of the EA Games label. "It is extremely gratifying to deliver an entertainment experience that delights our fans, and to have the opportunity to introduce new people to the franchise. Already, we are seeing unprecedented play times and online activity which is very rewarding. This launch solidifies Battlefield as a leading entertainment brand."

EA revealed last week that it had already shipped a massive 10 million copies of the game worldwide, and it unsurprisingly dominated UK sales charts released today.

Congratulations, Dice! A veritable mega-launch and impressive sales numbers as thanks for all your hard work. :D

It would be interesting to know how the sales figures compare to those of Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops. I think at least the latter had even more impressive early sales, and MW3 is expected to top even those, if I'm not mistaken. I Googled a bit, but couldn't yet find exactly comparable figures. For example, CVG's archive article didn't have units sales. http://www.computerandvideogames.com/27 ... es-record/

Thats pretty damn good considering it took BFBC2 around a year to get to 5m sales, I bet EA are ecstatic at this news.

Yeh its very impressive but to be honest I'm absoulute poo at it! I spend most of time dead and trying to crawl my way upto a better gun is just taking ages. I last played MW2 on the PS3 and the learning curve was much better than this! I guess not knowing the maps is a big thing and with such large maps it makes a heck of a difference...But I'm still poo!

Don't worry mate, I was too! Judt takes a little practice. I still suck at aviation though, and inevitably any venture into an aircraft leads to suicide, but it is awesome.

Well done to EA and DICE. I've been playing this non-stop since release, it's a really cracking game.

Doesn't COD sell 5 mil in one country on launch day?? lol

Nah I'm not going to rip on it as I got it on Saturday and think it rocks! The presentation Dice have made is simply awesome and the remixed Battlefield 2 (not Bad Company 2) theme tune is simply brilliant and brought back memory's.. I hated BF BC2 and just couldn't get into the multiplayer, IMO BF3 is WWAAAYYYYY better and tough, I'm enjoying it. I just finished the single player campaign today too which is not too bad actually!

So congrats EA and DICE, it's the best Battlefield yet!!

Good numbers for a good game, no doubt marketing spend will take a chunk out of the revenue, I will judge it's success if 300,000 are still playing it in 6 months time.

I am also loving this game. The only problem i have, and hopefully someone will know how to get round this, is that on the xbox 360 how do you get in a game if there is 6-8 of us all wanting to play. I know squads are limited to 4 so we have been trying to get a squad to join a game and then invite the rest individually but what with the servers being almost full not really been having much joy and when you do manage to all get in the same game we are not all on the same team. There shoud be an option for all the party to join as two seperate squads

I wonder how many of those have since been traded in, mine's gone back, and I know another guy who's getting rid of it too.

Could've sold even faster and even more if they hadn't p**sed all over their customers
