Syndicate: 'We tried several approaches before settling on FPS'

Senior level designer brings us up to speed with Syndicate

Syndicate's February 2012 release date might have come as a surprise to many (including us) but Chronicles of Riddick and The Darkness developer Starbreeze seems to have put a lot of thought into its franchise reboot.

Speaking to CVG and its camera boy, senior level designer Andreas Gschwari revealed his team worked on a few different ideas for Syndicate before finally settling on what we see today.

Gschwari went on to delve deep into the world of Starbreeze's version of the franchise, which features an intruiging mixture of sci-fi, social commentary on consumerism and some good old corporate espionage.

EA has launched a trailer showing the evolution of the series, from the original action strategy game to its forthcoming first person shooter reboot.

The Darkness was absolute rubbish and this shows absolutely no understanding of what the original Syndicate games were. Making a game in the same universe as another game isn't a reboot of the original. Most disappointingly is that if they were so set on making a FPS with RPG features then they have the System Shock IP sat doing nothing.

I've never heard anyone actually call the darkness rubbish....that's still a game i have to play.

Just out of curiosity what makes it a deus ex clone?
The new syndicate has promise. Oddly enough in shooter season 2011 the only fps i really want is resistance 3, but early next year i want the darkness 2, prey 2, and syndicate.

Although you are entitled to your opinion, I have to tell you sir. You are wrong. The darkness was bloody brilliant and captured the spirit of the comics perfectly.

After seeing the trailer for Syndicate i have every faith that the new game will do the same. Also why does everyone always forget that syndicate had fps elements anyway. In wars you could play whole missions in first person if you wanted to.

The Deus Ex comments are also funny since syndicate was a big inspiration for the series in the first place. the look of JC denton is pretty much ripped off wholesale from syndicate.

We have really messed the franchise up, but are too stubborn to admit it - so we thought we would send endless press releases out to try to convince people this is anything other than a bland, generic FPS which will be swallowed up by bigger, more established brands.

Oh, because we are developers we know better than you.

Why don't I believe a word of this?

    Go f**k yourselves, Starbreeze.

Thankfully Syndicate will end up in the bargain basket in GAME within a fortnight, (if not sooner), of its release.
