Next Xbox smaller and cheaper than 360

And runs a version of Windows 9, claims new rumor

The next-generation Xbox will be a lot smaller and far cheaper than the Xbox 360, claims a new report.

Blogger MS nerd, who Industry Gamers notes has previously reported accurate early information on Microsoft's abandoned Courier tablet, says the machine will also contain ARM-based processors and run a version of Windows 9.

"With a heady mix of rumors, tips and speculation, I am now stating that Xbox codename "loop" (the erstwhile XboxTV) will indeed debut a modified Win9 core," claims the report.

"It will use a Zune HD-like hardware platform-a "main" processor with multiple dedicated assistive cores for graphics, AI, physics, sound, networking, encryption and sensors. It will be custom designed by Microsoft and two partners based on the ARM architecture," they added.

"It will be cheaper than the 360, further enabling Kinect adoption. And it will be far smaller than the 360. It will also demonstrate how Windows Phone could possible implement Win9's dev platform on the lower end."

These claims come amidst increased chatter surrounding the next-gen consoles, most recently from respected industry site Develop who rumoured that Microsoft is planning a Christmas 2013 launch for the as yet unannounced Xbox.

The new xbox will be polkadot pink and have sparkling twilight dildo for a controlpad.

Rumour means nothing. Anyone could have written this and submitted it as ''news'' to cvg.

    ?

after all the others and Windows 8 about to be released, did you really think that they would just stop?

Not a chance windows 8 is due late 2012 and with all the Xbox rumors they cant make an OS in time for release which means it will just be a modified version of windows 8.

Not really, it just gets tiring seeing MS try to shove the next big thing out when they could be fully supporting the current. But that would be the nice and right thing to do.. so not likely to happen :?

Windows 9? That threw me a bit. It made the entire think unlikely, still not impossible i guess. Sounds like they are going the wii route.

Hmm, could be true, I remember reading on some random website early last year or even before then that the PSP 2 was going to have a quad core CPU 'Cell' processor and look what happened.
So it's tough how much rumours get right, still an ARM based system? Not sure, unless IBM make it, they have made all console CPU's so far. They make the Wii U one. In fact, IBM must have raked in a fortune of the back of all three consoles. Kudos to them.

This actually goes in line with what a source at Neo Gaf said. They said it was called Xbox Loop and is on for a 2013 E3 reveal.

So this means Ninty get next year all to themselves if true

I cant see it being cheaper than the 360. With a more advanced CPU/GPU, More ram and AI/Physics chips (is this true, becuase this could be amazing) it should be around £350-£400 surely. I hope all the Loops contain Harddrives (solid state ideally).
I love rumours like this, i just wish it was coming out 2013, i cant wait for 2014.

It was believable up until the Win 9 comment no way is there going to be a Win 9 when it launches, Win 8 doesn't come out until next year and there is no way in hell they would release a new OS less than a year later so either it's all Bull or CVG or who ever gave them that win 9 comment don't know there 8's from there 9's

It is completely possible that it will come out running a version of windows 9. Windows 8 is pretty much done, anybody who is running the beta can tell you that. And as far as developing a version of windows 9 for xbox goes it's even easier.

Xbox is just direct X in a box hence the name. Xbox 360 runs on dx9, dx12 should be with us by 2013 though I would be very surprised if the next xbox was based around this, far more likely to be dx11. So all they have to do is build a new OS that allows access to the dx11 functionality and basic messaging, networking and drive management.

Lets face it, most of a full windows release would go unused on xbox, hell, it goes unused on most pcs!

    What he said.

Microsoft will have been working on Windows 9 before Windows 8 will have even been completed. And if we are talking a christmas 2013 release, its definitely feasible.

As for using ARM processors over AMD, Intel or IBM, completely different architechture to the current XBox so I am guessing backwards compatability is out of the question? And maybe this new console will have significantly lower power requirements, and with a bit of luck, be significantly quieter?

  15. bazzatuk on 8 Nov '11 said:

The other concern is that if they are using an ARM processor, and it's cheaper, then it could also mean that they could be taking the Wii route and going for a less 'hardcore' console and that means it might only be slightly more powerful than the current Xbox 360.

For it to be a lot smaller would mean SSD storage (which means not cheaper) or maybe no optical drive (which would be cheaper but commercial suicide).

  17. bjjcjc on 8 Nov '11 said:

Or maybe cloud storage? or something akin to onlive?

  18. TykerD3 on 9 Nov '11 said:

SSD are getting quicker, but just looked up the price and its £124 for 120gb. I know MS would get that cheaper, but it still leaves them more expensive than traditional harddrives by a large margin. Are SSD's quicker?

lol, these reports are getting more and more ridiculous!

as if the next xbox is going to be cheaper than the 360. a top end pc is £1000. and surely the next gen consoles will have tech closer to top end pc tech. though i supposed ms have already proved that their willing to use poor hardware to save money / get their system out before the competition, so perhaps it will be cheaper. you'll have to buy 10 xboxs next gen instead of the 5 you had to buy this gen though.
