Uncharted 3 sells 3.8 million copies on day 1

PS3 exclusive becomes "one of the best-selling titles of 2011"

It may only have debuted at No.2 on the UK All Formats chart earlier this week, but Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception sold 3.8 million copies globally on launch day.

The PS3 exclusive's whopping day one figure makes it "one of the best-selling titles of 2011, putting the third instalment on a clear course to be the biggest selling game in the trilogy", Sony said in a statement.

Uncharted 3 launched to critical acclaim earlier this month and currently has a Metacritic average of 92.

In our own Uncharted 3 review we praised Naughty Dog for its "confident storytelling, astonishing visuals and obscenely ambitious set pieces", all of which "make Uncharted 3 the best of the series" and "an absolute must-have".

Shortly after its release though, developer Naughty Dog felt moved to enter the debate surrounding criticism of the game's gunplay mechanics.

    Congratulations ND and Sony!

You see the difference it makes when a strong marketing campaign goes with a great Game!

    Reckon we'll see a bit more Uncharted just like Halo, COD, BF and . . . . . . . . . .

Kudos to Naughty Dog, but i still maintain that Uncharted 2 was the better story, i felt kinda let down by 3's. Sure its got some cracking set pieces but 2's story is still the pinnacle of the series for me.

Also 3 had far too many glitches for me. Overall it felt rushed.

    Congratulations to Naughty Dog.

Hopefully you'll be able to add another sale to that number tomorrow.

I think you can apply that to all games these days. The fact people make a big deal out of any game that works properly staright out of the box says it all. Sign of the times.

I had no problem with the gunplay either, although I spent most of the game brawling.... brilliant game, the best I personally have played this generation.

    Well done ND

True, far too many games are patched to high heaven come release.

Though i will say that Uncharted 2 also had a hell of a lot less glitches than the 3rd game.

Nah, that's 3.8 m people being flexible and able to quickly adapt, 3.8 m gamers who are above such quibbles but who cherish great realized characters, fantastic voice work by an inspired cast, ingenious setpieces, awesome animations, a captivating story which also addresses mature themes (in comparison to the majority of its peers at least), most of the time an astonishing freedom in how to engage enemies for a game that gets so critized for its linearity, a fun and refined (over its predecessor) multiplayer ...

    Take your pick.

While I too think that Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is (still) the pinnacle of the series and just the most fun to play, the third entry is a helluva game that every PS3 owner should should get his hands on as soon as possible.

I would recommend people watch the featurettes. I wouldn't have known the ocean was fully simulated in the cruise liner chapters and the flooding sequences are dynamic, therefore unique with every playthrough.

I take it from your comment that you have not actually played the gamer then - So many ignorant people!!!

I am half way through my 2nd play through (now doing it on crushing - having completed all treasures too) The gun play mechanics are ok - they are more realistic and maybe thats why some are complaining!! They obviously want the bad guys to roll over and die when you fire near them - try playing the game on very easy then!!!

Still this game is certainly one of the best games of the year!!!!

Who's trying to bad mouth it? I've mentioned issues i have with the game but its still an excellent entry. Do you even bother to read posts before typing the absolute s**te that rolls around in your skull?

And as for your Gears comment where's your sales figures? Gears 3 sold 3 million on the first week as well and has been out a hell of a lot longer than Uncharted 3 so i'd probably guess that its sold more overall so far.

Awesome- will be picking this up in time for Christmas methinks so no spoilers please!

@the Numpty dragging Gears into this- if sales and willy waving is all you care about then you're as much a gamer as Adam Sandler is funny. Uncharted has amazing graphics, set pieces and animation and a mix of gameplay styles (platforming, shooting and a tiny bit of puzzling) Gears has amazing graphics, superior gunplay... And awesome set pieces. I get to play both so maybe I should wave my willy right back at ya?

Got arrested the last time I tried that, though.

It is an awesome game. Enjoying it so far. Not got far enough into the story to say wether it's better or worse the Uncharted 2. The animation touches are brilliant though, the way he walks along and interacts with scenery is very well done. Loving the jokes too"

"I'll come over there and blow the lock off"
    "Hey, be careful"
    "I said lock"

Ahhh maybe you have to be there...

Well done ND, I loved it and only saw one glitch during my play through. As for the gun play it was fine, I had no problems. I do agree with the poster about the story to a certain extent, the final sections of the finish weren't as strong as the last game. Also the smaller non-essential cut scenes were a little disruptive at times, similar to KZ3 although not as bad.

However ignoring the nit-picking they have done extremely well and produced a fantastic game with some real moments of gaming quality beyond many others.

    SHIPPED!

CVG annoy me with this they always call shipped "sales".

Uncharted 3 is amazing but this will just make fanboys crow with joy when the sales figures are revised down to the 1.8 million all other sites are reporting it sold.

    Seriously CVG, get it together!

  28. SuperMike861 on 10 Nov '11 said:

3.8 million sales. No, I don't believe it. It didn't even sell more copies than BF3 this week in the UK, I love Uncharted but these numbers don't add up. It's a fantastic series but it doesn't pull in numbers like this.
Black Ops sold 5.6 million first day on all platforms. Uncharted sold 3.8 million on PS3. Doesn't add up to me. Fair enough if it's accurate.

Very pleased that it sold that many. Just waiting for a s**tload of them to be part exed, only for me to get it cheap as I did with the last 2, and virtually every other game I've played (most for under £10 used). Gaming isn't so expensive after all!

And where has this been confirmed?

Every website says Sony has confirmed it's sales, not shipped except for the one you haven't provided yet.

    Don't say vgchartz.

It has sold over a million which is great, this is the fourth time on CVG they have listed shipped numbers as sold, now it doesnt impact on me as I am not a share holder in the company - but I do think misleading people is wrong.

Well said man . If a game is as good as its sales then i think zumba is goty, think i would rather play uncharted 3 though unless any milfs want to come over to my place and play zumba am more than willing.(i think milfs and yummy mummies were the target audience for zumba)

    Not really.

    From one of your sources

"There was a little confusion over whether that was sold or shipped, but Sony later confirmed it was units sold on the first day."

IGN say the same thing too

I doubt it would be one of the biggest selling games of the year too if it's actually sold 1.1m worldwide in a week.

The real number probably lies somewhere in the middle of 1.1m and 3.8m.
