Zelda's most memorable tunes

A rundown of the series' greatest hits...

THE TOE-TAPPING ONE

Ocarina Of Time: Gerudo Valley
No one dislikes this. NO ONE. It's testament to its castanet-clacking Spanish awesomeness that even being the backing to Ocarina Of Time's most maddening bit - skulking around the thieves' lair - didn't ruin it. And yes, we almost chose Wind Waker's similarly brilliant Dragon Roost Island theme instead.

THE MELANCHOLY ONE

Ocarina of Time: Epona's Song
Pops up all over the Zelda series, this. Its soothing pastoral tones somehow lood you with nostalgia the very first time you hear it, and create a bond with Epona that never quite leaves you. Also the Zelda song most likely to spontaneously pop out of your gob in the shower.

THE TERRIFYING ONE

Majora's Mask: Clock Town Final Hours
A chillingly fitting soundtrack to the apocalypse: ethereal, echoing chimes, plus Koji on his old friend the synth, playing chords so hair-shudderingly sad that tears come out of your ears. Amazing really, since the chord sequence is the same as Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go. (Lie.)

THE UPLIFTING ONE

Wind Waker: Ocean Theme
Bringing hints of the original Zelda theme - Wind Waker had six composers putting modern spins on the classics - this bombastic ballad is the perfect match for those crashing waves and cawing seagulls. And it's the only thing that kept you sane during that damn Triforce Shard hunt.

THE ATMOSPHERIC ONE

Minish Cap: Sky Temple
Two impressive songs follow each other on GBA: Cloud Tops (a beeier version of the main theme) and this menacing number, all rumbling drums and snake-charming lutes. Good thing it works, because you hear a lot of it: the sprawling Sky Temple takes a full 17 years to complete.

THE SOOTHING ONE

Twilight Princess: Queen Rutela
Kondo struggled with the N64's ocarina tunes because they all had to be composed from just five tones. All the more amazing, then, that he was able to evolve one of them - Serenade Of Water - into this beautifully touching Twilight Princess melody. Nice that brutally-murdered Zora queens get such lovely songs.
