MechWarrior Online, the new free-to-play big robot battler under development at Piranha Games, will use Crytek's CryEngine 3, the developer has announced.
The online reboot will be set in the year 3049 during the initial stages of a huge interstellar war and with the enhanced Crytek visuals now powering it, there could be plenty to enjoy here for fans who fondly remember FASA's original series.
"Here at Crytek we are incredibly proud that Piranha Games have selected CryEngine 3 to power their forthcoming Mechwarrior Online game," said Carl Jones, director of Global Business Development CryEngine
"2012 will see a new segment in the games industry, as free-to-play games will step up to offer true AAA quality to gamers. CryEngine is becoming the technology of choice for the highest quality online games."
Anyone who enjoyed stomping around in clans Wolf or Jade Falcon in the mid nineties battling Kodiaks or jump-jetted out of trouble in a lightweight Locust may well be tempted to give this a go. There's plenty of further details on the rather intriguing looking MechWarrior Online official site.
We have to say this has given our nostalgia glands a bit of tweakage but will this tempt old MechWarrior pilots out of retirement? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
