PC pirates outnumber legitimate users 100-to-3

"piracy is an extremely widespread problem on PC," says Bohemia Interactive

According to Marek paněl, CEO of Arma developer Bohemia Interactive, there are 100 pirates to every three legitimate users in PC gaming.

This is according to data the PC developer pulled from a new anti-piracy system it uses that gradually degrades the quality of a pirated game, doing things like blurring the graphics over time or reducing the accuracy of weapons.

But is it abolishing piracy? It seems unlikely as paněl explained to PC Gamer:"Our statistics from multiplayer show that for every three legitimate buyers playing their game in multiplayer, there are 100 (failed) attempts to play with a pirated version."

He went on: "This indicates that piracy is an extremely widespread problem on PC, and it's also really worrying for us as a mid-sized, independent, PC-oriented developer. We do not have any such data for single-player, but I'm afraid there the ratio of pirates to legitimate gamers is undoubtedly much worse."

To be fair that is hardly accurate, I bought it and didn't really like it so never tried the online. My friend bought 2 copies and both kept going blurry and had the aiming thing because it said they were pirated despite both being bought through steam on 2 accounts (2 separate users wanted to multiplayer)

    Holy shockingly inaccurate statistics Batman.

For every three people who bought the game there are 100 families buying cabbages in the area, might as well have used a stat like that as they don't state unique attempts.

Plus I'm not sure how it should worry them unless they have new evidence that states the pirate to loss of sale ratio.

Worried your game isn't selling, make a better game.

    I smell bull dung.

Your numbers are inaccurate considering legitimate buyers are also suffering from this game degradation. Is this just an excuse and easy way for you to concentrate on the console now instead of the PC? As guess what, games can also be pirated on those too and much earlier as well.

That's the most accurate figure since monks estimated age of the earth in 800AD.

You people should really read the article before going into attack mode. The developer didn't say it was 100:3, what was said is there were 100 ATTEMPTS per 3 legitimate users. That could be mean that 10 pirates, tried 10 times each to play and failed. CVG's headline, you know that thing means to attract attention, is what implies the idea of 100 pirates per 3 buyers, but when you read the article, you see what that figure actually means.

True, but to be fair, the title of the article is "PC pirates outnumber legitimate users 100-to-3."

Uh-oh, I hope this does not stop them developing Carrier Command, (Even if they still are) of which I've heard eff-all about for ages.

Also, title misleading. Well done Sun....I mean CVG.

    BUY GAMES, PEOPLE.

I hate when developers waste their life on a game (that truly deserves the cash) and then players just download it. Its terrible. Shame on you guys!

I need to wait to buy Skyrim, while all my friends downloaded a pirated version... But I won't budge, I will never do it.

    Shame on you...

Complete bs. Piracy is a HUGE problem, but they pulled those stats out of their ass. Also, there's not just "pirates" and "legit", the 2 are kind of merged together in PC gaming these days.

CVG need to improve their research department a bit more. FADE is not a new anti-piracy system at all. It was implemented on the original Operation Flashpoint over 10 years ago!
