1,600 Modern Warfare 3 cheaters banned, fix coming

Infinity Ward swinging around its ban hammer as players exploit cheats

Infinity Ward has been on a mass-banning spree as numerous glitches are being found and exploited by cheaters in Modern Warfare 3.

Upwards of 1,600 players have been banned so far and we expect many more to come.

Posting on Twitter, IW's community man Robert Bowling said: "Any attempt to cheat, hack, or glitch in #MW3 will not be tolerated. 1600+ bans issued. Updates in works. Please cont. to report offenders."

He later added: "We are doing mass bans on PC as well while we work on updates," and has repeatedly promised a "Hot fix already in the works" for multiple glitches reported by agitated Twitter users.

Despite its issues, Modern Warfare 3 has broken movie box office, book and game sales records for five day worldwide sell-through in dollars.

    The paranoia continues.
Online gaming is the new witch-hunting. Beautiful.

In the same way terrorism is to blame for the bugs in the global economy and the glitches in the ecosystem, just as the hackers were to blame when Sony had been cheap on their I.T security.

I'm not a big fan of playing with losers who feel the need to cheat to win a small, hollow victory, but to be fair, how can you ban players who have simply found a way to exploit a bug with the game if it already existed? The developers should release games when and only when they're finished if its such a big deal to them.

If we're taking about players who have hacked or tampered then I have no sympathy and they deserve it but ones who've found a way of sneaking outside of a map? Sad but it's their choice to test what boundaries the developers didn't fix.

And so far, at rank 50, I don't think I've seen any suspicious activity on MW3.

Yes , Sony having their security hacked is same as someone exploiting a glitch in a game. Riiiiighhht!!!!
So if I cheat at football , this is same as breaking into your house, and making your private and exploit glitches details available publicly, because your security system can be bypassed??? Its your fault you didn't have armed guards, guard digs and lasers surrounding your building that set off alarms????
I personally feel a temporary ban would be fair, as they don't have to be cheap t**ts
and exploit glitches, but it should be a few hrs at most, and then a day with further infringements made.
etc etc. my friend said he had some guy hiding under the floor of a map, and just picking people off. That deserves some sort of punishment, as it's not supposed to be part of a fair contest. Yes impetus is on devs to fix glitches etc, but they also have right to protect their product and ultimately their financial position, by banning idiots who exploit these glitches , until they are fixed, as if they dont, people walk away, and they lose out on money.
9cant believe i just defended activision, I feel kinda dirty now lol)

Na man, campers are great fun to sneak up on once you know where they sit, then wait for the stupid bastards to come back to the exact same place and get them twice!!

Hmm, guess that makes me an anti-camper? Lol

The bs that gets me though is quick scoping! It takes no skill at all and why do they still allow it to be used?

Had a game of MW3 this morning on Dome and there was a blatant qs player there.

    Same sh*t, different year

Glad I traded this in after ony 3 days and got most of my money back.

Also, Why can't developers release a game without any bugs or glitches these days?

Do they have QA teams anymore?

    Disgraceful really.

    Totally agree.
    Hackers should be banned.
However, someone who has found a glitch?
Try not releasing a game with glitches in it.

good luck with getting a game released with no glitches, in modern era, that would mean they never get released.

I'm of the opinion of 3 strikes and your out. Strike 1: 24 hour ban. Strike 2: 7 to 10 day ban. Strike 3: so long, fair well, thanks for playing. However life bans never work imo. They always manage to get back on somehow. As for banning campers, I do the same as mentioned. See where the noobs are, kill em and wait for em to come back. Decent deterent for a while.

It's just impossible to test every scenario in a modern game and try to imagine all of the ways that people may attempt to misuse a game. The fact that the developer is doing something about it should applauded in my book. Not all developers are quite so active, after all they've got the money at this point.

I play BF3, and I don't see camping being a problem at all. Sure, players defend their objectives like they're supposed to - in Rush Defence, for instance.

Why is camping a problem in MW-games? Is it just poor level design that allows obvious "campsites" - or is it just players who get shot by the same guy from the same place 5 times, then scream CAMPER?! Then it's kinda their own fault. IF someone is at the same place repeatedly... I would just flank him and take him out, or countersnipe - as you know EXACTLY where he is!

Maybe it's just the small levels with high player count that's the problem. I haven't had a single camping-problem in BFBC2 *or* BF3. If you know where someone is sitting... shoot him?! Ofcourse, in BF3, you could take down the building he's in, lay smoke, use mortar fire, or ... dare I say... TEAMWORK.. to take out "campers". It's the nature of the game - sometimes you attack, sometimes you defend. If I need to defend a "bombsite" I'm sure as hell not going to run around like a moron looking for the enemy. Let them come to me! Why give up the tactical advantage. OK, so still, some "heroes" in BF3 still advance WAY past the actual bombsites they're supposed to protect - that's *censored* annoying. Cool that you want to rack up score for yourself, but help the damned team, will you?! SAme goes for snipers on offence. What?! Yeah, stay back and make no effort what so ever to support your team or help take the objective.

Camping isn't a problem. Not helping the team is a problem.

What about the cheaters get their personal details posted in the leaderboards for all to see and an automated large font 'c**t' is posted on their facebook, dashboard, home screen etc

  16. KK-Headcharge78 on 20 Nov '11 said:

Ban them, it's not all down to glitchers. I have no interest in the c**ts be they in BF3 or MW3.

I'd just like to say that anyone that has taken advantage of a certain glitch on the Outpost map is a coward and a c***.

    That is all.

  18. Typheous on 20 Nov '11 said:

Someone did the outpost under the map glitch and got a MOAB. Stupid thing is everyone could see he was under the map on the kill cam. Needless to say I didnt hesitate in reporting him through XBL and through the game itself as well as sending some general abuse stating what a complete pussy he was.

Why are people talking about campers??? they're not banning campers lol we talking about idiots exploiting glitches like hiding under ground on.maps where they can't be killed but can pick people off at will

I am actually glad they are doing something right for a change but sadly there are still many lag switchers and glitchers in the game that are still running free. IW please do something ... thanks.

Bowling confirmed in a Twitter post that there is a team at IW who basically trawl through connection data looking for the spikes in activity that highlight 100% any lag switchers (apparently lag switchers stand out like a sore thumb) these people are immediately banned.

Oh and anyone suffering lag or lag compensation, try turning off the theatre recording in the menu options it can really help.
