Vita: Three free augmented reality games, one sweet trailer

Sony details its augmented reality offerings for Vita

Sony has confirmed that PlayStation Vita owners will be able to download three free augmented reality games from the PlayStation Store.

And by the looks of the trailer below, they look pretty cool. It shows table-top football, some laser puzzle game, a track and field-style sports mini game, fireworks, and a garden simulator.

Augmented reality is, for those unfamiliar, when a real-life setting is populated on-screen with virtual objects - usually via the use of a camera and some form of marker that the software can recognise.

Similarly to the 3DS, the Vita will come with six 'marker cards' which the machine will recognise for placing augmented reality objects into real-life surfaces.

This trailer shows you what it's all about and gives you a look at the games on offer:

Sony also today revealed its first-party EU launch line-up for the Vita, including some big-name titles.

These ar games sound so boring and point less like the 3ds cards these will go straight in the bin when I get my vita.

    Enjoyed that trailer a lot.

They might be "boring" at the moment but it is exciting where it may go. I am thinking Star Wars chess and then some. :D
My phone has pointless AR apps but this looks more purposeful. I can see this working best with some kind of headset.

My biggest gaming regret is that despite the sheer audacity of Move, I gave it a go, but Wii motion plus is far better and much more widely used (move support has all but disappeared), but this is such a shameless 3DS rip off that Nintendo should get their lawyers to investigate.

I had more fun with the regular wiimote/nunchuck (pre motion plus even) than with Move e.g. RE4:Wii
    Shame BF3/MW3/UC3 don't support Move.

Sony evidently care more about 3D than Move - that is adopted in much higher numbers.

Don't agree with lawyers though ... innovation needs freedom and AR existed before Nintendo. Let the legal madness end with Apple! (btw Move is a bigger rip off of the wiimote in any case  )

Nintendo did not invent AR, not to mention the fact that the PS3 already had an AR game out (Eye of Judgement) before the 3DS was even a twinkle in the eye of Nintendo's bank account.

Anyway, not a huge fan of AR myself, at least not in its current fairly basic applications. Here's hoping for a game that will push the whole venture forward.

AR isn't something that has ever really interested me but some of the ideas there look pretty cool. The football stadium one looks excellent, and the other game they demoed a while back 'reality fighters' looked pretty sweet too.
