Henry Ford - father of the now-ubiquitous mass-produced car - once quipped that if he actually asked people what they wanted, they'd just ask for a faster horse.
Ask Dave Public down your street what he wants from the PlayStation 4 and he might well come up with a similar response: a faster PlayStation 3.
This feature is taken from the latest issue of PSM3, order it here and have it delivered straight to your door
But this is space-year 2011. Will lashing two last generation consoles together and sticking a bigger number on the side cut it for a manufacturer besieged on all sides by competitors and innovators? Worse still, is bigger actually better any more?

But for us in the business of soothsaying, power is a good place to start. The PS4 won't drop everything to focus on pure processor grunt, but it will be notably more powerful than the five year-old PlayStation 3. There are two schools of thought on how the company will achieve this extra punch.
The first is a continuation of their current efforts. The PS3 is built on the bespoke 'Cell' processor, funded by Sony at great expense - it lightened their wallet by several hundred million dollars. The factories that make the processor carve an even greater chunk out of their bank balance: in December 2010, Sony bought the majority stake in the Japanese factory for a stonking 1.1 billion dollars.
To jettison that setup would be financial insanity - especially when a future version of the Cell CPU could, according to those in the know, more than double its capability to 500 gigaflops. That's 300 more gigaflops than PS3 can manage and, as we all know, the more gigafl ops something has, the better it is. At gigaflopping, anyway.
The second option is madder, and involves Sony ignoring all that good advice. Nvidia are known to be working on a monster graphic chip codenamed 'Project Denver,' with a timing that would allow a clever console manufacturer to jump on board at an early stage. Project Denver is ARM-based. That doesn't mean you'll be wearing your PS4 - ARM is a system architecture common on mobile phones, and one Nvidia hope to scale up to very high-end machines. With smartphones becoming universal, compatibility could be as important as power.

This means PS3 devs can't just divert memory resources into, say, graphical wows when the AI needs are small. It takes more careful planning than that to get the best from it, and that takes time - and money. Hence the initial prevalence of disappointing ports.

I dont even think the graphics need to get better (although it is nice), they just need to be cleaner. Less jaggies and the like.
But we need to see better physics. There are so many possibilities which open up with greater physics.

I would be pretty surprised if Sony re-use the Cell architecture, the cost and complexity of game development is so high these days that I think developers would genuinely abandon Sony if they deliver another impossible architecture, especially if Microsoft and Nintendo have a head start on the next generation. I think with Krazy Ken Kutaragi out at Sony they will go with something much more conventional for the next generation.
I could definitely see Sony adopting ARM, the power requirements are low and it would be the same architecture as the Vita, making cross-platform development much easier. Of course that would probably doom backwards compatibility with the PS3, but Sony managed to survive most of this generation without PS2 BC (and even profited from it with their HD remasters), so I can't see it being a huge problem.
I don't generally view Sony as very adventurous when it comes to innovative controllers, so I would expect the PS4 will come with a standard Dual Shock with a touch screen in the middle to try and soak up some of the Wii U business.

Nice article.
And the PS3 has never "sucked" it's just a shame that only exclusives have ever really made the most of it's unique abilities, where PC and Xboxs have relatively similar architecture, porting is easy, PS3s get the short end of the stick,
The Xbox may be a better traditional gaming machine, and Kinect may have more potential than Move, but the PS3 is a better multimedia machine, and it can do more "stuff".

REALLY?
atari 2600 was inferior to intellivision and vastly inferior to colecovision yet it was the atari in everyones homes
nes was less powerful than the sega master / sg 1000 but completely owned the market.
gameboy was steam powered compared to lynx and gamegear, guess which dominated?
playstation 1 dominated the market was far less powerful than its sega and nintendo competition
playstation 2 was stone age compared the xbox and gamecube yet dominated the market.
technical innovation and brute force power / pretty graphics are completely different things as so many console generations have taught us.
as for ps4 i'd expect it to be most of what sony promised for the ps3 1080p/60fps but without other os and with a more dlc focussed store and heavier use of home / avatars to push sales of meaningless drivel, more memory and an attempt to make psv a wii u type controller.

An otherwise well written article once more marred by that OnLive and gaming-through-download-and-internet-connectivity-only nonsense. You just couldn't resist the urge to advance that agenda, eh CVG? When will REALITY finally dawn on you lot? OnLive is more than "just a bit wobbly" with a slow or temperamental internet connection. Furthermore, gaming through online streaming or downloading only will effectively close off entire geographical regions of the global market to publishers and developers, and not just in South America, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, or Australia either. There ARE significant areas of both North America and Europe that have poor or no internet coverage, nevermind it being broadband. Finally, there are still many customers that are not content to only have download versions of their purchased games when paying full retail-like prices for them; I am one such customer. I have happily bought a plethora of games on Steam...when they were on sale for a fraction of their usual price.
I now understand why you opened up this article quoting Henry Ford where, if you read between the lines, he was talking about giving people what you want and think is best regardless of what the people/customers want. Sometimes the companies involved do produce genuinely useful innovation, while at other times it's a load of gimmicky b*****ks. The less direct control and customer power I have, that you have, that we all have, the worse it is. That is NOT a good thing! It never has been and it never will be for Joe Public. Companies may rub their hands together in glee over the thought of more control and anemic customer rights, yet if anyone thinks that's a good thing I encourage them to familiarize themselves with just why unions came to be and what conditions were like for people, workers, and customers during the height of the unchecked Industrial Revolution. (They were abysmal and are what led to organized union resistance.) The same concepts apply today except that we've grown apathetic and complacent. Hopefully people will demonstrate there stubbornness and refusal to just roll over for the commercial world on this matter and make it quite clear that since they/we are the ones that are going to be buying the goods, those same goods damn well better cater to what we want and not solely to what companies would like to force us to want.

I have both consoles and have always said that the xbox is definitely the best gaming machine and the PS3 is a better media machine.
But when the new xbox dashboard is launched on Dec 6th, I think this may eclipse what the PS3 has to offer in terms of media. At the moment, you can watch tv programmes on the PS3 but the interface is not that good and you certainly don't browse the internet using it but at least it is capable of doing so - something the xbox can't.
The new dashboard from xbox will bring the TV capabilities to it and the added bonus of voice control too (if you have Kinect) thus making the xbox a better all round media machine than it was previously.
PS3 is also let down by its PSN as it is soooooo sloooooooow - you can go and make a cup of coffee, drink it and twiddle your thumbs for a while waiting for a patch to download and install (something they will need to address for PS4)
With the new dashboard, I think the xbox will definitely out perform the PS3 in most aspects and the only reason I would recommend the PS3 over an xbox is its blu-ray capability and maybe a few exclusives such as the uncharted series (but even xbox has some great exclusives so not an advantage just a choice)
Personally I am more excited at the immediate future of the xbox (kinect is still in its infancy and can see this becoming its greatest asset as games start to utilise it better)
As neither is due to release a console for at least a few years, I think sony need to sort out their PS3 & PSN first as they will start to find more and more will opt for xbox with kinect and they could well find their sales dwindling rapidly.

If they do move on to a new control method, then I hope the DualShock 3 is at least an option. Despite what other people say, it really is perfection for me and I much prefer it to any other controller and yes, that includes the 360 one which I find is too clunky and less sensitive with poor face buttons. There would be no reason not to make a new control method as long as there was the choice to use other inputs.
A simpler architecture is a must. PS3 ports have been a mixed bag over the years with very few developers really taking advantage of the system. Only Sony and a few really major third party titles that began life as PS3 exclusives (like Final Fantasy XIII and LA Noire) have bothered. We can all agree that Sony exclusives are better looking than Microsoft ones, can't we? The power is obviously there but if only the elite can get to it then it may as well not be.
And yes, as KFD says, keep that Cloud gaming nonsense away, or at least don't make it compulsory. A huge amount of the problems with Blu-ray could be solved by putting in a faster drive, at least 8x but ideally 12x or 16x. The 2x drive is why loading times are long and there are so many installs. A hybrid download and disc-based console would be the best of both worlds.
I disagree with the need for an SSD. That's just too expensive - even a basic one which has a small amount of space is ludicrously expensive. I'd prefer a large, fast HDD. A nice 1tb or larger one at 7200rpm.
1080p, 60fps with AA and AF would be a beautiful thing. With ATI and Nvidia's new AA, games could look truly polished next gen. Good 3D that doesn't butcher framerates and visual fidelity would also be nice. Just as the original Xbox and PS2 gave us brief glimpses into HD, the PS3 is giving us a glimpse at 3D. Proper 3D could be beautiful next gen if the power is there.
That said, I don't want a PS4 yet. PS3 games still blow me away, and to me this generation still feels young. What Todd Howard says sounds about right - 2014.

I agree that I would still like the dual shock control option but do not agree that the xbox controller is any less sensitive - it maybe bigger but I also find that the trigger buttons are better placed than on the PS3 controllers. Buttons and analogue sticks though appear to be equally as sensitive to me - I have many games on both consoles so can easily compare the two.
your second point about Sony exclusives looking better - well apart from Uncharted 3 - which in my opinion is the best looking game on any console - I would say that you obviously haven't played many xbox exclusives - gears of war looks a hell of a lot better than Infamous for example.
The xbox is also not as constrictive as the PS3 and the RAM can be utilised fully on the xbox unlike the PS3 which has its RAM split
thus making an xbox easier to programme for and also why there is so little difference graphically - the xbox can assign more ram to the graphics if needed
lordirongut on 1 Dec '11 said:
I was thinking in terms of Halo versus Killzone and that lark for graphics. To be honest I haven't played either Gears or InFamous (neither holds any particular appeal to me), but on the whole the PS3 exclusives I've seen have looked better than the 360 ones and it is generally agreed that when both machines are taken to the limit, the PS3 prevails. That's not to say 360 games look ugly - certainly in terms of multiplats the 360 has had a much, much better generation. One only has to look as far as something like Bayonetta to see that. PS3-superior multiplats have been few and far between simply because of the difficult architecture, pretty much limited to games that started life as PS3 exclusives as I said in my last post. The PS3's power is there, but only the elite core of Sony's developers and a very select few third parties make the most of it. The PS3 trigger problem is, however, undeniable. Actual triggers rather than the bumper-things we have now would be nice in the DualShock 4.

The OnLive method of gaming is the future. Whether its next gen, or the gen after that. Dont judge the concept by OnLive, because that is a load of sh*t i would agree. But i expected it to be sh*t as its in its infancy. Just give it time. Dont be biased in your opinions either. I dont like the idea particularly, but i can see that its the logical progression.
The many customers that want hard copies of games will purchase online once they dont have a choice. Its either that or give up gaming, which nobody is going to do for the sake of holding a hard copy in yer hand.

At least not in our lifetime. At the end of the day as long as people want a console with physical media there will always be that option.
If the only option was to pay £40 for every game forever with no chance of resale the industry will fall apart and we will see CoD, FIFA, FF, Halo sequels.

The cost of development is way down now that the devs have a handle on the architecture. The toolkit Sony sent out helped a great deal and will surely be revamped based on developer findings from this gen. Companies like Naughty Dog and GG have helped a great deal with figuring it out. That said, I would bet the PS4 is a lot like the PS3. The CELL will be more powerful and we may end up with either more than one, or just a larger core count version. I would not be surprised to see a ARM used as a secondary unit like the current setup. The RAM will be doubled if not tripled and the BD drive will be a lot faster. The faster drive may even prevent a lot of the installs. I believe the BE CEll is a two core, 32 SPU processor. This would more than double the processing power, leave BC intact and allow devs to maintain the same programming tactics. While I would love to see a SSD included, I doubt that will happen unless the price of them comes down drastically. I could see them putting in 1TB SATA drives though since those are so cheap. As for the controller, I really hope they leave it alone. The VITA and PSP already do what Nintendo says they are innovating. I for sure don't want some new motion crap like what Nintendo did. Touch screen while cool, kills battery life and takes your eyes off the TV.

i hope sony will re-use the cell: just use 7 3.2GHz cell processors, 7x6=42 spe. one processor for the Os and all the commun tasks : chat, video chat, etc. the ps4 will be there until 2020. Only God knows what things will be. maybe another inventions will bring us internet lines 10-20 times faster than 20mb/s many people have now. just imagine a killzone 4 or 5, 32 people waiting for the game to start, 32 people sending their live video/audio flow, instead of the avatar. one full cell processor would be perfect for the os and all those tasks. sony would have a lot of power, until 2020, they could add many other tasks via regular updates. cell cost less now, and they could make them using 32nm technology.
developpers know how to develop on cell.they don't need to learn and develop graphic engines from scratch.just some changes for the multi multi cell support, and, in a few months, they are ready to creat great games.
i hope they will keep the blu-ray for games. 8x reader would be perfect, with sacd support.
i hope there will be some card readers, with support for the sdxc, this must cost a couple of dollars, so please, use it on the ps4
i hope there will be some usb3 ports. sometimes i need to import some hd videos into the hard drive, usb3 would be perfect.
a 32 gigas copy takes a lot of time over usb2
i hope there will be a ssd drive, 80 gigas would be nice.and a 2nd drive, a sata3 1to drive. you could update these drives, for exemple, you would use a 4tb sata drive, and you could use a 512g ssd drive, whenever prices drop a bit more. i believe and hope, in 2013-2014, ssd drives will cost much less than now, maybe 100$ for a 512gb.
i hope sony will use 2048mb of system ram. no more "there is only 256 mb" song.in 2 years, 2048 mb memory will cost, maybe, 10-15$ to sony. remember, "my" ps4 will be here until 2020, please, don't save money by using less ram.
i hope there will be a graphic monster, like 10 times faster than the fastest graphic card we have now. but don't make it noisy.
i hope there will be a wireless headset sold with every console: microsoft did it right with the x360.
i hope they will develop and sell another webcam. what a shame, when i play start the party, you have those great colorful hd graphics on the screen, and you see your video, and it's poor quality, barely better than a VGA cam, delivered by the eyetoy.
please, just make a eyetoy2 with 720p/1080p video with some carl zeiss optics
i hope ps4 will be able to read, create and display 4k content. in 2-3 years, 4k displays will be everywhere. i want my ps4 to be able to read 100-200 gigas blu-ray drives with 4k content.i want 4k games support.remember, in 2-3 years, we will be able to create videos with our cell phones at 4k. they already do 1080p.remember, the ps4 will be here from 2013 until 2020, it need to be "future proof", 4k native support is just mandatory, i think.
i hope there will be a 10gb ethernet connection, or 2x 1gb. i want my ps4 to be used as a nas, for all the media files. i want it to be able to stream content to my tv, my cellular, my tablet, my av amplifier, etc. i should be able to browse and listen to 10000 webradios. i want to watch these movies or photos or audio at home, or anywhere in the world, using a wifi connection.
i want a pcmcia like card, where manufacturers could create new peripherals for the ps3, where usb isn't enough.
i want games. huge games. wonderful games.i want raytracing and a final chip, that will remove all the aliasing and other problems, so the image is perfect, just before beeing displayed on the tv.just make a chip, that will "only" apply a 32x fsaa algorithm.no need to stress the cpu for that. the special ship will do the work.well.
i hope they will protect games and content, no more usb custom firmwares.no more psn attacks.just make those kids at failoverflow give up, and go back to school.
ok guys, maybe the ps4 will be totally different from what i hope, but, this is how i dream ps4 will be.
i don't have a 360, but i know x720 will be as great as the ps4. whatever happens, just bring us great games. hundreads.
we, gamers, are already waiting for the next gen. So please, sony and microsoft, move on, and bring us your new consoles.

that and technology is no where near the standard to qualify as 'next generation' and wont be for at least 5 years. top end £1000+ PCs are only marginally better for games than the 5 year old ps3. you only have to compare battlefield 3 to see that. the differences, while there and noticable, are marginal. certainly not the difference that we've seen between EVERY other generation gap since gaming began anyway.
i most certainly wont be buying a ps4 in the next few years if SLIGHTLY better graphics and a few more objects on screen is all i'm gettin' for my money!

The standard monthly bandwith limit is 20-40 gigs. 4 of my friends with PS3 want to play DC Universe but won't because it's too many gig - so if you can get people to download free games there's no chance they'll download paid ones.
I hope all the next-gen consoles use Blue-ray, what's the point of having a new console disc drive in 2012-14 that doesn't play HD movies too with HD sound.

It would make no sense to rush out because on an impending jump in PC visuals, the simple reality is consoles can never keep up. Even if a console went with cutting edge tech, because consoles don't change during their generation, eventually it would lag behind the PC again. A console can start a generation comparable to the best PC has to offer, but it certainly wont end its generation that way. So its a futile effort to chase the PC. It only makes consoles more expensive, for an 18 month effect, where people wont even be buying it because it cost too much.

Half the problem with downloading games on PS3 - especially DCU is the day and a half it takes for it to download. Platstation Network is notoriously slow - I use the same internet connection for both PS3 and xbox - both wired in - yet PSN takes 4-5 times longer than xbox live. I suppose that's the difference between a free service and a premium quality service...
lordirongut on 3 Dec '11 said:
For those saying DCU takes forever to download, it isn't just that - it's every MMO. Buy WoW or Everquest or Final Fantasy XI and they all take just as long - it's nothing to do with PSN, it's just the nature of the beast as an MMO.
bamozzy on 3 Dec '11 said:
All downloads take forever over PSN - including game updates compared to the time it takes for them to download over Xbox Live - I have both consoles and don't understand how an exact same size file that takes seconds to download on xbox takes minutes on PSN despite using exactly the same modem, broadband service and both wired (not wirelessly). Also not utilising any other aspect of broadband too ie PC internet etc..
Because of this I have come to the conclusion that it must be down to the PSN
lordirongut on 3 Dec '11 said:
I'm not saying that PSN isn't slower, because it is, i'm just saying that DCU isn't a great example because they're all that way. Its the game's fault that DCU is taking forever, not PSN's. Xbox FFXI took me a ridiculous amount of time to patch too. As did WoW on PC.
bamozzy on 4 Dec '11 said:
To be honest - I used DCU as that was the last thing I downloaded - I just assumed that it was down to file size and the fact that it was over PSN that it took so long - I am sure if it was available on xbox, it would not have taken nearly as long - and not the fact it was an MMO.
regardless - the PSN is awfully and unacceptably slow and would still need addressing for the PS4 especially if they move towards a more digital media. As more and more games are released that seem to require multiple patches, I am becoming increasingly frustrated by my experience of using the PSN and therefore less likely to be purchasing a PS4. When I buy a game, I want to play it not wait for 10 minutes for a patch to download and install. I refuse to buy a game over PSN as I think it would be quicker to purchase from a mail order company and wait for delivery than download it.
