Mario Kart 7's 'Community' mode was originally a 3DS feature

Unique way of grouping people was intended to be a hardware option

Mario Kart 7 director Kosuke Yabuki has revealed that Mario Kart 7's Community feature was originally intended to be a built-in option in the 3DS.

'Community' lets players join or form their own groups and play with each other without having to register each other as friends. When a player makes their own community they send a join code to others who can join the group and play against each other without ever being direct friends.

"At first, we wanted to include a feature where friends could gather like this directly on Nintendo 3DS, but schedule-wise it was tight and wouldn't fit," revealed Yabuki.

"So I said, 'I'll do it with Mario Kart 7.' Having said that, I knew I had to think of something and drew a rough plan on a big sheet of paper," he added (thanks Siliconera).

Nintendo's promised late November 3DS firmware update has been delayed to December. The firmware will, among other things, introduce the ability for users to capture their own 3D videos and purchase game DLC.
