Wii U won't spell the end for Wii, says Nintendo

Consoles can co-exist "for some time"

The arrival of Wii U next year won't mean the death of the Wii, according to Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime.

The exec told Time that Wii is still performing well, and reaching a new audience of gamers at its lowest price point to date.

"The consumer buying Wii hardware today is going to be a different consumer than the one who will be buying Wii U in the future," he said.

"This is the first holiday that the Wii is available at $149.99 or below, so it's an expanded demographic we're reaching. These are consumers who have heard about Wii for the past couple years, but at $199 or $249 it was economically out of their reach.

"We haven't announced pricing for Wii U, but you can definitely expect that pricing is going to be different and that the games are going to be different," Fils-Aime added.

"We do believe that Wii and Wii U will coexist for some time. As we drive the install base of Wii, we're really setting people up to take their gaming library and be able to transfer it over to Wii U."

The Wii, Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword and Super Mario 3D Land each sold over half a million units in the US on Black Friday.

...which is exactly why we left it for dead this year, and have shown no signs of supporting it beyond this year.

Am not really a fan of the Wii but the PS2 and PS3 managed it so can't see why they can't. Sayin that the 360 is almost as cheap as the Wii and I know fit I rather hae but then again the Wii has the brand awareness for families/old people.

Depends how supported it is. Since its obvious Pandora's Tower and The Last Story are the last big Wii games. Unless Nintendo have something else up their sleeve it will just go as fast as Wii U comes out.

I am happy with my Wii and have no intention of ever selling it, I have a good selection of games old and new but I can't see sales continuing for much longer if Nintendo fails to support it with new software. Zelda SS was their big 'swan song' and I hardly feel that 'Boom Street' or 'Mario Party 9' are really going to shift future consoles. Now that Zelda SS is finally out the Wii will begin to fade, it's inevitable really, because unlike the PS2 it rarely gets decent multiplatform treatment.
PS2 still had huge 3rd party annual franchises like Need For Speed, Burnout, FIFA, WWE, Silent Hill, Tomb Raider, Guitar Hero, Buzz, SingStar.

i seriously think this could be devastating for nintendo. like sega devastating.

it doesn't know what it wants to be. it will be too expensive for the casual crowd - who don't care about flashy graphics anyway, and i don't think it will be enough for hardcore fans.

the jump in graphics for the price will be almost pointless, and a lot of people are tired of this generations graphics, so more of the same (basically) for a premium is not going to fly - especially with the ps4 and 720 on the horizon and ready to blow the wii U out of the water.

all it will get will be publishers recycling ps3/360 games and more zelda/mario kart etc

also that controller will push the price way up.

they have seriously made a f*ck up here. they didn't have the balls to go toe to toe with the competition - or to have a clear identity.

They haven't announced anything about the power of the Wii U, so we don't know what it's going to be. In fact they've not announced anything at all really besides the outline concept of the tablet. They've gone toe to toe in the past and it's not done them any favours, but I'm sure cost will be the biggest issue in terms of getting casual Wii owners on board.

Nintendo have about $10bn in the bank. They won't go the way of Sega, at least not yet. Sega had Mega CD, 32X, Saturn and Dreamcast do poorly before they called it a day.

They do need to get it right though, and they have definitely been stuttering lately. I don't care how they do as long as they make enough to keep going and making games.

Aww Reggie. You're quite sweet, you know, when you brazenly deny the facts like that.

But maybe you have a couple of surprises up your sleeve? I'll take a proper 3D Wii Pokémon and this generation's long-overdue F-Zero please.

Would you not rather have a big flashy colourful HD F-Zero? Actually that may give seizures. Not such a good idea.

3d pokemon rpg immediately equals 40 million consoles sold. They need to save that bullet for the wiiu(POKEDEX!!!), but game freak may not want to do it.

I'm still loving my Wii, I love playing Skyward Sword on the big 42" via the HDMI upgrade unit that Nintendo release three years ago to stem the public outcry. I also love playing F-Zero HD, Starfox HD, Luigi's Mansion 2 and Pilotwings. Yes there are many more years left in this forward-thinking platform.

Ahhh bugger, the drugs appear to be wearing off.................

Hopefully all the cheap party-game rubbish will stay on the wii then. Hard to believe i own a game's machine i use so little. I'd have sold it if the measly amount of cash it gets would be of any use to me.

the only way this can or will happen is if the wii u launch is stupidly handled and the wii family unit is down to about Ł50 even then all it will see is shovelware, vc and ea sports titles.

Yes. I'd rather have that as well.
