PlayStation Network maintenance is scheduled to take place later this week, from 4pm UK time on Thursday December 15 until 2am on Friday morning.

PSN downtime is always a nuisance, especially when it's scheduled during a prime time gaming slot, but if it helps keep the network "more secure and better than ever", as Sony CEO Howard Stringer said in September, then who are we to argue.
Unveiling the first in a new series of monthly PSN charts last week, Sony said inFamous: Festival of Blood has become the fastest-selling PSN game ever.

Balls, I think that will be my last chance to play as I'm going away on 16th.
This does seem to happen a lot, god knows why it needs to happen as often as it does.
