Milestone reached in just 16 days, beating the record previously held by Avatar

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 grossed $1 billion in sales in just 16 days, Activision said today.

According to the publisher, it has become the first entertainment property to eclipse 2009 movie Avatar's 17 day $1 billion record.

Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick said: "Engagement of our Call of Duty audience continues to rise around the world.

"Call of Duty as an entertainment franchise has made an indelible mark on popular culture and its broad and continued success is further validation that audiences increasingly value interactive experiences over passive experiences."

Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg added: "Call of Duty has become that rare entertainment franchise that transcends its own genre. Core gamers love it, as our stellar reviews show. But every year, new people are drawn into Call of Duty

"And while the franchise continues to set records, our fans still seem to want more, demonstrated by our record setting start on Call of Duty Elite. We are committed to helping everyone connect, compete and improve their game, Call of Duty style."

Modern Warfare 3 sold 8.9 million copies last month in the US, according to data released by the NPD Group.

You know I didn't like Avatar but when things make this much money you can't help but be impressed. It's been a long journey for COD, I mean years wise, game engine wise it's been a quick pop to the shops.

Still, many, many games on they're still making COD games that I can grab and have fun with for a month. Congrats Activision, you're scum but gosh darn it you're the industries most successful scum and on some level being with gaming from the start, I'm slightly proud.

We should all be ashamed of ourselves. I bought it, and its sh*t. So i cant moan about how its broke records. Shame on us all for adding to Activision's world domination and allowing them to continue to regurgitate the same game over and over again.

Really strange that CoD hasn't gone the movie route yet, I mean big budget movie, sure there'll be some crap fan made stuff floating about.

I am starting to understand how so many people buy Call of Duty, before the PSN or X-box Live I never really had a window in to other peoples gaming habits. But it seems to me so many people with consoles buy Call of Duty and pretty much nothing else. I had this one guy on my friend list when MW released and all he ever played was MW and at that time I thought he was a one off, but as my friend list has grown I have seen that maybe I'm in the minority of gamers who enjoy playing new games month after month.

I personally just couldn't stomach the same game for the amount of hours some people sink in, don't get me wrong I have favourite games which keep me coming back but I do leave them every once in a while to gather dust. Some people must never let Call of Duty out of their consoles, they may as well let Activision release a console that only plays COD and sell that to them.

Sorry to blab on but I remember buying World at War the day of release and some people already had played the game on-line for over 72 hours, to me that is an addiction and needs looking at!

^^ some of us had early access mate ;)

Well played Activision again, not suprised at all if you follow the COD sales year on year.

And, please EA are the biggest Evil still in the industry ffs, just check out the scamming theme park on IOS / Android ;)

they need to expand on the spec ops, objective based stuff and incorporate it into the campaign. but with their lack of imagination, that would risk cannibalising the spec ops mode itself.

why are all games pushing us from one end to another via explosions these days. the 'ride' is as shallow as it gets. give us a GAME please.

Shame on anyone that instead of thinking for themselves, copies this mantra just because everyone else does. People are so quick to jump on the CoD hate, bandwagon & compare people that buy it to brain dead zombies, that they don't realise how ironic their comments are.

I too like to hate on stuff that's popular, that's why I hate the CoD hate campaign - it's become way too mainstream, man!

Yes early access may have been a week early (I'm guessing) but to play a game for 72 hours straight off the bat is ridiculous. These people mustn't sleep, work eat or do anything else.

still smaller in size than those who hate everything Apple just for sake of it. Hating is not cool (or should that be kool? bah i'm too old)

each to their own regarding COD, i bought Battlefield this year just for a change. they're much of a muchness to me as i don't really play them online. simple reason is that i'm too s**t. enjoyable nevertheless.

Shellster- The irony is mate that this year the single player in MW3 is arguably a lot better than BF3 unlike previous incarnations from MOH and BFBC which were very good.

I agree with this, MW3 SP is easily better than the BF3 SP

    BUT

Bulletstorm sh*ts on both of them for the SP, in my opinion ;)

Agreed along with Gears of War 3, Crysis 2 and Homefront

Skip the last one it's utter garbage

I thought Homefront was alright til it decided to just copy CoD and go OTT in the last few chapters of the game.

I liked the bleakness and the setting and the newspapers scattered around was a nice way of filling in the back story. The Goliath (?) was fun to use, I liked the little Half Life touches here and there.

With a better studio and a bigger budget I think Homefront could've been special, for the record I don't think Crytek will add anything to Homefront 2 after playing the Crysis games.

One billion that seems a bit exaggerated as I only left 40 quid and no tip at the till.

Today I saw a bus (whoa that's big news! .. did I see a cow also??) with the BF3 add on it. Seems that the advert campaign is longer than the one they put in the box.

Why do I mention that? Ah yes, that's because EA must have spent a fortune in ads and I'm not sure whether they will make a penny with their game, when they have paid for the extras.

Well, I don't care much anyway. Dodo I have answered your question on the FPS so here you go.

ah well, i picked up bulletstorm but it's in my 'yet to start' list which now numbers about 12 games or more! must. stop. buying. games. but. can't......

True, yet a movie that's played widely across a country and the world in cinemas that don't require you to invest in any equipment to experience it will also have a much larger pool of potential customers.

I enjoyed the MW3 single player experience well enough and I got a conclusion to the storyline from CoD: MW and MW2. I still detest Activision as a company and have no intention of supporting their games. Before anyone says, "Oh but you bought MW3!" This is true, I did...I bought it at a massive discount trade-in deal for BlOps which I purchased used and when I was done with MW3 I traded it in for maximum value and bought Skyrim with the proceeds. In short: I got to play three games (and I'm still playing Skyrim) for the price of one game. 8)

I was actually going to say they have not got a cent of my money this year, but I just got a text from my sister, and guess what my nephew wants for Christmas! Damm you COD. Even when I boycott you, you are still getting my money.
