Sony released PS Vita in Japan this weekend and, like any hardware launch, it was never likely to go completely smoothly.

According to Kotaku, one Japanese journalist has reported that, when the system freezes, the hardware will not power down. Holding down the power button for an extended period, as suggested on Sony's PS Vita help page, appears to fix this, but that hasn't stopped the issue repeatedly occurring for the affected user. The freezing issue has been experienced by pro-gamer Kiryu Tsukimiya too.
Some Vita owners are also reporting being unable to boot up their handhelds, despite them being fully charged, while one early adopter has posted pictures of the portable with what appear to be screen "stains" or "spots" on its OLED display.
Has anyone imported a Vita and had it turn up early? If so, tell us about your first experiences in the comments section below.

I'm starting to think the more powerful these systems get, the more failure rates go up.

When you sell a couple hundred thousand things theres bound to be a few bad ones.
I wouldn't blame sony, I'd blame the Chinese sweat shop kids who put it together badly.

I agree with earlier posters, its great getting things last here for this reason.
Sony do have a history, the PS2 plugs that caught fire etc - no problem in the UK though as far as I remember

This is why i would never become an early adopter of new tech. PS3 launch consoles have high YLOD rates, same with 360 with high RROD, now PSV! I will be getting one in 2-3 years after launch that's a definite thing, the same way i had a ps2 in 2004, psp in 2009 and ps3 in 2010
shogunreaper on 19 Dec '11 said:
PS3 didn't have a high Ylod rate, especially not when compared to the rrod.

Are you talking about Sony products as being well-built? We must live in different worlds. I remember a slew of problems with the PS2 (jammed disc trays, mainly), loads of problems with the original PSP model, PS3 woes (mainly firmware related). Both my PS3 and PSP have had to be replace by Sony and I sold my PS2 when it was slowly becoming unresponsive. And my MiniDisc player of many years ago mysteriously died on me too.

Let's not leave out the 3DS having black screens of death or some Wii consoles needing to be sent to Nintendo because they couldn't read new discs. Just thought you'd forgotten to be fair in your judgement of console problems, they hit all the companies.... even your favourite.

Yep they ain't exactly bulletproof machines. I had 2 original PS1's go on me (ok one was a chipped model), my PS2 stopped reading disc's properly and my original BC PS3 developed YLOD. The replacement PS3 sometimes has trouble reading dual-layered discs. My Sony Walkman's headphones with the wee remote control went tits up and they wanted about £40 for replacements.
Ok i've had 2 360's go on me as well, luckily inside the 3 year warranty but my 2 original Xbox's are still going strong.
Oh and my modded Sega Saturn still works perfectly as did the snes i have in storage last time i turned it on, none of the carts battery's work though.

On the 4th 360 - all RROD.
2 PS3's - I traded the first fat for a slim.
Original Xbox - Could survive the apocalypse.
PS1 - needed to be turned upside down to read discs.
PS2 - worked great but struggled with God of War.
Dreamcast - started to randomly reset itself during games. WD40 and a Youtube guide fixed it.
SNES - Yellow as f**k but still truckin'. Game don't work? blow the dust out and off you go sweetheart.
Gaming has gone soft.

One died 5 minutes after playing Streets of Rage 2 on it!
I could understand massive games that work it hard but not that.

Sadly, the more advanced these handhelds become, the more likely they are to develop the same kind of faults. My 3DS currently has a strange problem where it won't turn on when you press the power button (even when fully charged). It does turn oneventually after about twenty presses, but the system clock resets itself (if there's any other glitches at the same time, I haven't spotted them yet). The problem's annoying at best, but it's been happening more and more and I'm just hoping it doesn't progress to anything worse.
Such is life with modern consoles. Mind you, my love for the 3DS and Vita remains undiluted, just hope this sort of thing gets fixed.

currently have 5 360's all work, only 2 problems, my launch 360 had a dvd drive failure resulting in it needing a new drive, and my jasper elite has fried its hdmi output.
have 2 ps3's a launch 60gb still working fine although only used for linux as it doesnt play games thanks to sony, yes, i did get my partial refund for sonys law breaking as can any phat ps3 owner even now, return it to the shop with proof of purchase and ask for either a full refund or partial refund in compensation for the removal of features included at the time of purchase, if they refuse tell them its the law under the sale of goods act 1977 as amended and if they still refuse then go to trading standards who will get your refund or compensation (you should get around £70-90 back or the full purchase price, that isnt your choice i'm afraid), my second ps3 was a birthday gift from a friend as a bit of a joke as he knew i had sworn off ever buying anything from sony again, at least he got me one on a low firmware (3.41) so since sony dont want me paying for their games that one is now running rebug 3.55.2.
of older systems i have most and all still work EXCEPT an jap launch gameboy (screen is dead), however i've had 5 ps1's die during their own generation and 7 ps2's died likewise.

It's mad because I have a PS1 from 1998 that STILL works and is played regularly by my mother who plays Hogs of War and Kurushi and my step dad who plays Driver 2 and TOCA 2. I had a few PS2's, they kept getting a lot of dust inside them but my slim is still going strong (smaller air intake). I sold my launch 40gb PS3 to get a slim PS3...both work fine. Also the 2 PSP's I've owned worked great.
I have 2 step sons and BOTH their launch 360's broke (not rrod), one just kept overheating after 15mins and the other would leave a nice gauge all around the disc. They both upgraded to Elites and had no problems.
My PC's graphic card blew.
Nothing I've bought that was Nintendo has ever broke for me either.
I'm not being a fanboy, just my personnel experiences. But 5 PS1's and 7 PS2's breaking within their own gen, what were you doing, turning them on with a hammer!?

He must be running an arcade mate, he has 5 Xbox 360s!!
Either that or he runs a care home for kids or something. How the f**k does anyone get through over 19 consoles in 3 gens?
Thats just the Playstations and 360's. Wonder how many Nintendos, Dreamcasts, and original Xbox's plus the handhelds he's had in the last 3 gens?
