PS Vita sales double PSP's in first 2 days

But fall short of Nintendo 3DS, reports Famitsu

In its first two days on sale in Japan, the PlayStation Vita has managed to sell 312,407 units, beating the PSP's opening numbers but falling short of Nintendo's 3DS launch sales.

PS Vita Screenshot
Japanese games magazine, Famitsu, revealed the sales for Saturday December 17 and Sunday December 18, citing data collected by Enterbrain.

In comparison, Nintendo 3DS sold 371,326 units over its opening two days, Famitsu notes, but the PSP managed less than half Vita's numbers.

It's been reported that Sony shipped 700,000 units to cover the launch of its new handheld, 500,000 of which were the 3G/Wi-fi model which Sony shipped as a limited edition which includes 100 hours of free 3G access.

More details should arrive later this week when Media Create shares its sales information for software and hardware.

UK retailers have started attaching prices to Vita titles, giving us an indication of how much we're expected to pony up for new games when the Vita releases in Europe on February 22nd.

Good numbers, a good start for the Vita.

    Hang on....

When you read the Andriasang article, that PSP figure is for just the first day - the PS Vita figures are for the first TWO days.

So, to say the PSVita had double the sales of the PSP is wrong, because you're comparing a 24 hour period to a 48 hour period.

Not bad. Not a surprise either since the PSP was such a success in Japan. I don't expect crazy numbers in the West but if the first few months' line up is solid it might have some legs up until E3 and a potential 3DS Lite reveal.

And you can add an other unit sold to that count come February, I will be purchasing, the only doubt being what launch title will I buy with my Vita

Suspect Nathan Drake's latest yarn but could be tempted with Ridge Racer for old times sake (bought RR as my first game for PSP, PS1 & PS3, I have history with that series)

That is not bad i suppose;) I still think(+ yeah i know its just come out)that it cost to much really. I will wait until it hits £199(for the 3G/Wi-Fi version) in the UK to buy one(2013/4 then) lol

    Question for anybody that knows.

Now Vita games have trophies do they add to your main profile you've always used or a specific Vita one ?

Say i sign in with my PS3 account and get trophies on Vita games. Will they add to the overall profile and show up on my PS3 as well.

I don't have any link to back it up, but I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the trophies will be displayed in the same list regardless which machine they were earned on. No separate Vita/PS3 folder, or so I seem to recall.

Really? That would change whether or not you wanted a Vita even slightly?

Man, this achievement/trophy addiction is weird. If I rang a bell you'd probably eat some dog food.

Thanks for the quick and good reply.

No, the opposite actually. I wouldn't want both lists merged it was just a general question i hadn't seen asked yet.

But well done for jumping to conclusions. Mr T would be pitying of you.

I couldn't say if this is a good or a bad thing. 3DS (at least according to Vita lovers) had no games at launch. It launched at a bad time of year. It was being sold at the same price point. And Nintendo were making profits on it at the time.

If we are going by Vita lover logic this had way better games except it launched at Christmas when you would expect it to sell like hot cakes. Especially considering its where PSP was in top form. But hey people were barking 3DS doomsday all year so I guess we'll see what happens come next year. I'm willing to bet Monster Hunter has something to do with it.

The hardcore always buy consoles at launch, then they all moan after the price drop. After things have settled down, sales will slow like with the 3DS, the price drop will come along, then the mass will go out and buy it. If you've got any sense, wait. But even if the console dropped in price, games and memory cards will still be dear. On top of that, you then have tech/software problems, which are usually sorted with updates/patches. I stay well away from a console in its first year. But I picked up a brand new 3DS for £115 from Amazon, the usual price was £230, I wasn't going to let Nintendo skank me. I bet Sony could knock the Vita out for under £150. Virtually the same design as the PSP, using virtually old tech (PS3), some nice little extra bits thrown in. Trust me.

By your own logic, shouldn't you have waited a few months for the inevitable 3DS Lite w/second analog stick?

I can actually explain it for you! See the japanese aren't crazy in love with the vita. It lacks backwards compatibility and they are still pretty into their psp's. It also lacks a monster hunter! The vita is releasing right when the 3ds is putting it's game face on. Sure the vita has a much better launch lineup but nothing that can really match monster hunter in hype. The 3ds just recently picked it's sales up to above the 300k point. That's what the vita's competing with, that and of course it's successor. It's similar to how the 3ds had trouble getting people to upgrade from the ds, except for the vita it's because everyone in japan would have to ditch their entire psp library. As a whole they aren't in love with it. Somehow they sold out memory cards though O.o

LOL! Did people buy memory cards but not systems? In seriousness: its nice to see Vita outselling PSP. It means despite what naysayers online say about them they are telling them to suck it because "we are selling better then our little brothers". I think it has something to do with game appeal. Uncharted is a title that will grab the attention in the West. Thats really the market that Sony want to focus on this time since Japan has never let Sony down before. As long as Sony can get a bigger foot inside the market it should do fine against Epic's smart phone.

  15. Fr33Kye on 20 Dec '11 said:

Actually uncharted appeals a bit to the japanese. They quite like the franchise. I think it's the mystery, adventure, and puzzles rather than the western cinematic style. Though i'm just guessing. Uncharted is of course no monster hunter, and japan, like everyone else loves everybody golf, but the rest of the titles are unknowns. I'm guessing a good part of sony's audience went out and bought 3ds. I dont think the price was a serious problem for the vita though. In the west sony just have to kick marketing up to the highest degree possible.

i think once its released over here, had its initial price cut (which i see being farely soon after launch like 3ds) and getting a steady stream of releases it'll sell pretty well, certainly be more of a success than the psp. it'll probably keep up with the 3ds far better than the psp did as well. The only benefit i can see it having is it'll probably outlast the 3ds in terms of usage. I see the 3ds as having a short lifespan given its lack of groudbreaking factor from the DS, and the fact its main appeal of 3D doesn't actually appeal to a lot of people. I see it being like the wii tends to be these days for most people, just being used now and again, rather than a long lasting every day machine. I do feel developers need some creativity to keep the vita going, the danger is that it'll end up with console ports and in these financial times people are struggling to pay for one copy of a game let alone two.
