According to research by TorrentFreak, Crysis 2 was the most pirated game of 2011 with nearly four million illegal downloads.
EA's sci-fi shooter was downloaded 3,920,000 times between its release in March 2011 and the end of the year, though we're unsure whether the numbers include the build that leaked a full month before release or only the full retail version.
Other popular titles were also hit with massive download figures. Modern Warfare 3 was downloaded 3,650,000 times, the research claims, Battlefield 3 3,510,000 times, FIFA 12 had 3,390,000 downloads and Portal 2 had 3,240,000.
Figures were also given for illegal console game downloads. Gears of War 3 was supposedly Xbox 360's most pirated game with 890,000 downloads, followed by Modern Warfare 3 with 830,000 downloads, Battlefield 3 with 760,000, Forza Motorsport 4 at 720,000 and Kinect Sports: Season Two with 690,000 downloads.
Wii download figures were surprisingly higher than Xbox 360.
Super Mario Galaxy 2 is said to have received 1,280,000 illegal downloads, making it the most pirated Wii game and putting it nearly 400,000 more downloads above Gears of War 3.
The second most downloaded Wii title was Mario Sports Mix with 1,090,000 downloads, followed by Xenoblade Chronicles with 950,000, LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean with 870,000 and FIFA 12 with 860,000.
The PS3 suffered from significantly less illegal downloads than the PC, Xbox 360 and Wii, and therefore was not included in the statistics.
The figures vary only slightly from last year's statistics, suggesting that increased anti-piracy measures have little to no effect on illegal downloads, which makes some developers' handling of PC titles even more questionable given the stats.
