Toshiba has showed off an awesome 3D HD TV today that can be watched without the need for glasses - like the 3DS.
Large auto-stereoscopic screens have been shown off before, but finding the sweet spot for a clear 3D effect has always been a tough and clunky experience. But, according to Engadget, Toshiba has it figured out.
The TV has a small camera in its base which uses face-tracking tech to refine the sweet spot for up to nine users (although its optimal for four).
The screen packs an impressive QuadHD 3,840 x 2,160 resolution which runs on full blast in 2D, and 720p in 3D mode.
It's expected for release in US in Q1 2012. And the price? Extend your mortgage - it's expected to cost around $10,000 (£6,500).

Glasses Free 3D gives me headaches.
I'll stick to glasses, not even a big issue really, they are much better designed and lighter and will only get better.

Cost enough for our Panasonic P65VT30, i've even gotten used to the size of it already.. which is not good because 42" screens look small to me now
I remember a few months back they had a glasses free TV in japan that translated to roughly 12 grand here.. oh boy

Head tracking?
Mission Impossible 4. I doubt 4 people, let alone 9 people will work very well.

I'll stick with my 42" passive glasses 3D TV. The fact I can take the glasses home from the cinema as spares is enough for me, and they are much lighter than the active type and feel more comfortable.

I'll just stick with the notion that 3-D is still just a fad that will never go mainstream....thankfully, Toshiba are helping this to be true. £10,000 for a TV is ridiculous and only really optional for celebrities and the insanely rich. I can buy 3 of these for my house so that I have one in the Living room, 1 in the Bedroom and 1 the Throne room! Or just buy 2 and get some sweet sound set up for them and still have £2000 to do what the f**k I want with.

Glasses.3d is useless to me, within half hour i.am bordering on headache and have to continually take then off.
I.was wary that of 3ds because of its 3d , but have no issues with it at all, although if I'm really tired, I have to avoid as eyes start blurring image

I've only just bought a tv and I had a choice between getting a 3d tv and a normal tv with better quality screen so I picked the latter.
After looking at a few tellys in my local curries, active 3d offered much smoother results (which it should do with £80 glasses) but I couldn't find enough content to warrant the purchase. The blu rays cost extra, I would have had to buy a ps3 to play games in 3d as my 360 doesn't run in hdmi and getting enough glasses for me and the family would have been expensive.
It's a cool fad and quite impressive when twinned with he right tech but for at least a few more years there just isn't enough content to warrant an early purchase when glasses free TVs will drop in price massively over the next 5 years.
Kudos to anyone who actually bought one though especially the sod above who's got a 60" panny vt

Unless games will run as nice as movies in 3d, I ain't wearing my glasses anymore.
I'm sure they'll release cheaper model soon, they just need to show off first. 5000 will be more reasonable price.
kirankara on 10 Jan '12 said:
New technology is always expensive.
First large HDTV's were 5000 too.
Overall, only think 3d is only good for gaming tbh. Films I've seen in 3d including Avatar, offered little to make me want to watch anything in 3d, and at times even detracted from experience for me. I want to watch a film, not become party of it.
sonic_uk on 10 Jan '12 said:
Wow, check out that bargain price! In a few years these things will be affordable though, just like everything else thats come before I guess.
The most impressive 3dtv's I've seen so far are the passive Lg ones, although the demo video was very impressive I wonder how many games would actually use its full capabilities? Like a console its only as good as the software on it. Time will tell.
Yeah I agree. I was skeptical about 3d at first seeing it as nothing more than a gimmick and in some respect I think it still is but it does make a game more exciting somehow (especially first person shooters where it can almost feel as if you're actually there in some games). Films though I fully agree, in my experience it actually has the opposite affect, distracting you from whats going on and as you rightly said I want to watch a film, not feel part of it (especially if its a scary film!).

these companies want 3D to take off big time, but then thay come out with prices like this, thay must live on a different planet.
roynluc on 10 Jan '12 said:
That's what I have, and damn impressive it is too. Football looks fantastic on it and even though I hate darts, it felt nothing short of being being there and having darts thrown at you.

I was going to get one of the LG ones after seeing it for 650 at Currys. Reading a few reviews and opinions put me off though, they all mention it has absolutely awful input lag for gaming. Especially this review.
http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/lg-47lw5 ... 081247.htm
Shame really because it looked bloody nice in the shop, even though it was only golf they had on.
roynluc on 10 Jan '12 said:
There is a simple solution to that, El Mag, as in you label the connection to PC instead of Game, which sorts the lag out. People have posted that on review sites to let others know of a solution.
El Mag on 10 Jan '12 said:
She liked the LG as well. If it sorts it so it's barely noticeable then it's definitely a winner, especially for the price. It's a pain in the arse looking for a new telly.
harris411 on 10 Jan '12 said:
I'm still surprised that people consider 3d to be a fad. OK, it's expensive and for the most part you need glasses, however, prices always drop massively over time as technology improves, glasses will be obsolete soon too. 3d is here to stay and will just be an accepted feature of every screen in the not too distant future.

You're not wrong mate.
I've now been given the go ahead/permission to get a 3d telly and have been searching the net all day.
Got a bleedin' 'eadache now.

alot of people cussing 3d and i bet alot of these people dont own it.
Well, im not gonna say what i own but it can be an improvement, most noticeable in 3D blurays, its actually clearer and the 3d has more impact than compared to the Cinema(perhaps not imax - as that is hd too but defo on all the other 3d cinema's).
Not really sat down with the 3ds, so cant comment,
just for the record, xbox can do 3d, mine does it without hmdi too. gears 3 was really good, kill zone 3 was good on the ps3 too but the best game in 3d is the latest motorstorm. If anyone say's 3d is a fad, please play this.
Also, for know u can get a really good plasma samsung 51inch hd/600hz, full 3d tvs for £900. The 3d glasses are £20 if u know where to buy them (thats currys online) lol.
I think glasses are the way forward, we are on the third generation of 3d tvs, and they are alot better now, plus theres none of this viewing angle cr@p and the glasses are getting lighter and its alot cheaper than 6k, cricky. ill have a new car instead.
cheers

What you going for, Plasma, LCD, LED, PVC, JVC or LSD?
I know you like your Panasonics, but they don't seem to have much going for a decent price do they.

I wanted an LED one but the Panasonic I saw was getting on for 2 grand. Even if we had that sorta money to spunk on a telly, there's no way I'd get away with it. I've seen a 37" LED Pana for about 750 quid but it's smaller than the one we've got now so I may have to rethink on a Panny.
Like I said, this is starting to give me a headach and that's before I've sat there for 2 hours with those silly goggles on!

And what cables do I need for one of dese fings?

I appreciate that, Baz as I've said the same thing to others on here.
However, since trying to source a 3d telly, I've been alerted to ethernet hdmi cables.
Just wondered if these things were specific to this type of telly due to this 'smart tv' laark?
Barry316 on 11 Jan '12 said:
I've only seen somebody use the features on a smart tv once to be honest. And he did it by connecting the broadband cable to a socket on the back of the tv.

You don't really see do ya. If anything it's just confused you even more, and made you wish black and white telly's were still going to save all this hassle.
Liverpool didn't have those.....they only had white telly's.

I think I would possibly be interested in a glasses free 3dtv if and when then price dips under £500, however I positively hate the new generation of ultra thin Led Tv's that stupidly don't have proper ports on the back anymore (apart from Hdmi) forcing you to use a stupid connector to plug in your old stuff one at a time only, and would only buy a new Tv if it had proper ports on the back. Having only one A/V port with a different plug for each type of connection is an absolutely ridiculous idea, and one which people at work moan about every day, and I agree with them. At least with an Lcd or Plasma the Tv is thick enough so that you have the room for proper ports on the back, and as I only look at it from the front I am not bothered it's an inch or so deeper if it means I can plug all my crap into the back of it simultaneously.

One thing that I've found out about that TV, which is practically the same as mine, is you can do that split screen gaming thing, where you can wear a pair of left/left or right/right glasses and you get a full screen for both players, whilst playing a split screen game.
slick loose on 16 Jan '12 said:
How well does that work, do the colours look washed out at all? I thought that the Playstation TV was the only one to other this feature!
roynluc on 16 Jan '12 said:
I haven't actually tried it yet, but from what I hear, it does a very good job of doing it. The reason why it works on this TV, is that it uses passive cinema glasses and one option in the 3D menu is a top bottom split 3D.
Once I've tidied up my entertainment stuff after having the TV put up on the wall over the weekend, I will try and test it out. I'm going to have to change the lenses in 2 of my pairs of glasses, but found a video on youtube that shows how easy to do it actually is.
Take a look...

Thats pretty interesting, let us know the results when you can mate. Another thing I wondered with those passive glasses is can you get better quality glasses/frames? The ones in the shop always seem really cheap and not particually stylish. Are there better, more stylish glasses out there?
