UK's best-selling games of 2011 revealed

All formats and single format charts inside

Industry trade body UKIE has sent over a list of the best-selling UK games of 2011, based on GfK Chart Track figures, and there's no prize for guessing which title came out on top.

Activision's Modern Warfare 3 was the No.1 game of the year, making it three years in a row that a Call of Duty title has topped the annual rankings, following similar successes enjoyed by Black Ops and Modern Warfare 2.

EA games FIFA 12 and Battlefield 3 took the next two spots on the all formats chart, ahead of 505 Games' Zumba Fitness and Bethesda's The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Ubisoft's Just Dance 3 and Assassin's Creed: Revelations placed sixth and seventh respectively, while Take-Two's LA Noire, THQ's Saints Row: The Third and Warner's Batman: Arkham City rounded off the top ten.

GfK Chart-Track business group director Dorian Bloch said: "2011 finished strongly for the traditional console gaming markets thanks to the arrival of 3DS to re-invigorate the hand-held gaming arena and also the notable UK phenomenon of Xbox 360, which sold more software both in units and revenue than any year since its launch back in 2005.

"Most of the All Formats top ten best-sellers of 2011 were released in Q4 which meant that for the first time over half of the entire year's software revenue occurred in just the last quarter of the year".

Not that surprising considering how long Zumba has been available for compared to Zelda. I doubt though that it will outsell Zelda over the same period of time (and Zelda is quite expensive for a Wii game)

Anyway..............surprised to see Saints Row The Third so high, I thought it would bomb considering what it was launched against, it's a fine game though.

According to the press release from UKIE/Chart-Track, Zumba is a monster:

"At No4 is 505 Games’ Zumba Fitness, mostly thanks to the release in 2011 of the Wii version - overall sales on Wii, 360, PS3 meant that the title topped the All Formats Chart 13 times in 2011, but on the Wii chart, the title ruled for record-breaking 28 consecutive weeks in 2011."

To all those people who complain about sequels, think on. This list illustrates that you are very much in the minority. More's the pity.

Even less surprising when you consider how many Wii consoles have been bought for home fitness. Nintendo absolutely hammered that demographic during its marketing campaign.

If I hadn't lost it already years ago, the news of Zelda: SS not even making it into the Wii Top 5 would have made me lose all faith in Humanity. I don't want to live in this world anymore...

Kind of agree with jim, Nintendo have kind of asked for it.

They asked for it and got it, earning them billions in the process and making plenty on hardware and peripherals. I'm sure they're very happy even if we'd have rather had a few more quality titles in the last couple of years!

"Er, you... I don't know how to put this, but..."
    "What? What did I do!?"
    "...you played drunken Zumba."

That i am suprised at and i thought Batman Arkham City would be further up, but at least it made the top 10.

Agree with the ds and 3ds list-personally, glad SM3DL came first and MK7 second.

No love for Rayman Origins, GR: Shadow Wars or Lego then? :(

As pointed out by bamozzy, but to make it a bit clearer, Zumba was released in November 2010 (according to Wikipedia, I don't really pay attention to Wii so apologies if I got that wrong) so it had the entire year to make sales. Skyrim came out November 2011 so it only had 2 months.

Its only a fair comparison if you take Skyrim's sales, and multiply it by 6.

Ah sad news that Skyward Sword, probably one of the best games ever made got beaten by some fitness rubbish shows that most gamers have well and truely abandoned the wii.

What we need to ask ourselves is not How could this happen.I point my finger squarly at you. The gaming press and us the readers of said press. The short sighted articles bemoaning the wiis lack of 'hardcore games' that sent droves of people that would of played the best zelda since A link to the past running. abondoning ship as fast as they could.

We all know in our heart of earts it was b*****ks, There were plenty of incredibly brilliant fantastically designed original games on the machine But the lack of being able to look at it in shiny HD or shoot some bloke in the head in incredibly gory fashioin meant that they didn't count.

But then again i saw it coming, the same thing happened with the GC and that really did have a shotfall of games full stop. I await the next few years in which people berrate whatever the WiiU has to offer and talk about how they remember when the wii was the real gamers, Completely forgetting that at the time you actually owned one you had three games all which came with it and you never bothered trying to find the wealth of brilliance that was available for it.

Ah well. Its just the nintendo curse i guess.
