Japan: PS Vita sales drop below 20,000

While Mario Kart 7 loses the No.1 spot on the software chart

Weekly hardware sales dropped across the board in Japan during the week ended January 15, but it's PS Vita that continues to make the headlines.

It's sad really, people don't buy a new console because it has no games, and developers don't develop games for it because it doesn't sell well. ~like a snake eating it's own tale.

If you 'look' at 'ALL' the numbers 'ALL' of them dropped a lot. Hmm did the Japanese go on holiday last week then LOL Anyway another 30K for the PS3 will do :P

+ "Japan: PS Vita sales drop for 4th week running" = WRONG! ! !:D

    Week 2 = 72,479 (DOWN)
    Week 3 = 42,648 (DOWN)
    Week 4 = 42,915 (UP)
Week 5 = 18,361 (DOWN) So how is that 4 drops in a row CVG? Hmm...

Oh go on you know you want to....Fine i will then. they shipped half a million for launch. then obviously stopped making or shipping any more.

So its good news because they've just sold all of the vitas.

as you know thats how it works. right....

The vitas biggest problems. A lack of games. The lack of proper backwards compatibility with the PSP. the confusion over the 3g no 3g argument. the price and finally. Nintendo getting their act together.

Thanks for the spot JBoo. My bad, maths was never my strong point :) You're right, there was a drop in sales for all platforms, but it's tough to argue Vita hasn't got off to a slow start

why do you care? Are you the illegitimate child of Howard Stringer?

The Vita is selling crap, that's the plain old facts for you. It doesn't mean it will be selling crap next year. By next year it may well be entirely cancelled!

Sony must have shipped more into the retail channels by now since the launch

Anyways No games + High price + Confusion on the SKU front = Low sales & poor performance at the moment anyway
And as someone else said Nintendo getting their act together a bit more has not helped them either

Is anyone else thinking that the slower-than-Sony-would-like sales might be due to it's release date? Releasing a week before Christmas means you'll sell a bucketload that week as people snap them up as late-buy presents but after that... no-one has any money left until pay-day in January, right? I'd be surprised if sales don't pick up again at the beginning of Feb.

Either way, I'm getting mine at launch here. I want one and there's the potential bonus, now, of Sony pulling a Ninty and giving early adopters free stuff if they have to drop the price any time soon.

Fair enough that other console sales might be down but Vita is a new console and already interest has fallen. 3DS sales were 300,000 units higher after the same duration on the market, and THAT was worrying.

Personally I don;t care what 1 region think of the Vita because of Western centric games. Wait until Vita gets japanese centric games ala Monster Hunter and you will see the sales rise just like 3DS did.

But I for one will be there Feb 22nd enjoying it :) and not thinking about sales figures. :D

Completely agree, looking forward to launch day and also Japan Studio getting their act together and releasing a new Locoroco or Patchwork Heroes.

I'm loving it! Can't wait for the US and Europe launches. I'll be sitting back, waiting for the price drop! Sony knows it's going to happen, which is why it's front loaded the prices at launch. Nintendo did exactly the same with the 3DS, they're still in profit, even after an £80 price drop (£230 to £150 in the UK).

  16. damoxuk on 19 Jan '12 said:

Yes but unlike the 3DS the vita costs more to make so any price cut won;t be to the degree of the 3DS. The tech of the vita is far superior and costs more to make hence the price - which I guess to the standard public who aren't interested in tech specs or good graphics but cheap toy looking consoles as long as it's cheap.

They're selling the VITA at a loss. Nintendo over inflated their prices thats why they could make such a huge cut. Not just that the VITA is using much more advanced tech so I wouldn't get banking in a similar price drop like the 3DS

That's what first party developers are for, but sony dont really have the same brand power nintendo do. Sony are betting a little more heavily on new ip's.

It's problems are likely brand and marketing!! It's like watching a car accident. Also the backwards compatibility issues aren't helping in a country that loves the psp.

C'mon seriously, the 3DS offers 3D gaming. The vita is like a dinosaur. I don't care how crisp your tiny screen is, it isn't 3D and anyone with half a wit will buy the console that can do 2D AND 3D.
The vita has "game gear" and "neo geo pocket color" written all over it.

Give it some time , its like tabloid press in here , doom and gloom. Japanese folks do tend to celebrate Christmas to some degree , but they tend to have a Romantic boyfriend/girlfriend thing on Christmas eve with Cutsey presents , teddie bears , jewellery etc , so unsure how that effects things. considering the choice on the market with tablets and smartphones do people think the market is widening up , so is it a case of - more choice =less sales.

The 3DS got off to a rocky start but is doing quite well for itself now hopefully the Vita can do the same. The price is probably the main issue for most people but as long as most developers don't avoid it like it's contracted leprosy, like they did the PSP, and bring out some high quality titles enough gamers will fork out for it leading to greater sales, price cuts, bigger audience, more developers and a happy Mr Sony.

    LMAO.

The Vita has also been said to look cheap - but at the end of the day the aesthetics are down to personal preference. I love the design of the 3DS and it definitely has a great retro modern vibe going on. Vita looks great too! I believe people are too easily swayed by the opinions of journalists - who, lets be honest - don't have any sense of design.

The 3DS is like a solid, reliable family car, the Vita is the sports car. Sports cars are cool but family cars will always be more popular!
