Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has revealed the Nintendo 3DS will be getting a new side-scrolling, 2D Mario title in the future.

"Although there is no logo here, we are planning to release a totally new side-scrolling action Super Mario in 2D as a key title for the Nintendo 3DS in the next fiscal year," said the Ninty president.
Nintendo's last Mario title, Super Mario 3D Land, topped the Japanese sales chart in 2011 by managing to shift an impressive 1,042,511 units.

Hasn't Mario been done to his absolute death by this point?
I mean, do we really need another Mario game? Really? Another one?
I get the feeling the gaming industry is beginning to go a bit wonky. Like it did in the Atari 2600 days.
Tired of the same old cr4p? Well, here's some practically identical cr4p to keep you entertained!

awesome news. this will definitely bolster my decision to buy a 3DS, this is exactly what i was looking for.
and for those complaining, mario is probably one of the only series to stay strong, where others around it have withered or died. and all that with modest hardware = pure gameplay.

Please for the sake of my sanity, please be a true follow up to Super Mario World. Complete with huge map, levels packed with secrets & hidden routes. I really miss the exploration in Mario games, it really needs to return. No more of this casual friendly New Super Mario Bros Lite stuff! And dont worry Nintendo, casuals will still buy it. It is a 2D Mario title after all lol

I am looking forward to this.

Wonder if it will be hand animated like rayman origins? (Although due to the resolution of the screen wouldn't particularly benefit from it)

you can moan all you like; when the formula is this good after 10 years or whatever, you don't have to look to nintendo. you have to look to everyone else for not being able to best mario. if mario's allowed to mail it in after however many years, that's a symbol of his continuing popularity, not to mention how exceptionally fun his games are.

10 years
it's like 25.

Glad to know that my preference for the old seemed to have contributed for the better
Just hope it will be truer to the original SMB games than the newer ones though...

I hope it's going to be more 'SMB World' than 'New Super Mario Bros'. I assume it's still going to utilize the 3D for some eye candy, like the 3D classics games, despite playing in 2D.

well said sir.
I'd like to add that no one reboots series like Nintendo do consistently, time and again, and only people looking in from the outside would think otherwise.
I also imagine no one will be playing Halo 6 when it launches, FFXV, CoD 10, Uncharted 5, Killzone 4, Fifa lost f**king count in all honesty, Metal Gear 9 (I think) and the rest as you are all so dead set against established series and sequels.
Good on you all though that poses the question: What games do you actually f**king play?

I agree that Nintendo is very good at keeping their franchises fresh. But I'd like to add that COD also tends to be one of those games that I end up playing an awful lot, even with the yearly sequels - it's a very enduring format, and they always add something new (currently addicted to MW3's survival mode...
Considering the popularity of football, Fifa will probably be going strong in the future as well, if EA keeps up the quality. Story-driven games like Final Fantasy should find their audience too, if the stories presented are captivating.

i like mario & luigi superstar saga on GBA, did they ever follow that up?
ste hicky on 27 Jan '12 said:
I play those titles myself, it's just the idea that people round here are the bastions of originality when if they look at their game collections most series are probably in to double figures now.
How many Halo games this gen? (for example) Halo 4 will be the 6th Halo branded title in the last 6 years.
They are top quality, don't get me wrong, but the 4th Uncharted is nearly with us on Vita. 4 this gen already?
CoD. Now i think MW3 is the purest CoD since 4 and it's co op modes are worth the entry fee but let's be honest: they just Raped Horde, Firefight and the rest and stuck it in the CoD universe. Spec Ops missions are a hangover from MW2 and since 2006 and CoD2 there have been 6 CoD's.
Everyone else get's a free pass to sell you the same thing every 12 months.
double standards much folks?

It would be great to have a 2D and a 3D mario game every year. pure Nintendo magic.
Now if they could get on with a new 1080 and Wave Race for Wii U what would be great. Just in case you're reading this Iwata-san.

Comparing the quality of constant new mario games to the repeated trash of yearly CoD games? i'm not actually sure what teh world has come to. anyone who thinks teh yearly CoD games are great needs to go stand in a corner n have a word with themselves, they're not a patch on a new version of a Nintendo game. Not just SMB but Zelda, MArio Kart and Pokemon. somehow nintendo can make a game that follows exactly teh same format... yet make each game completely unique, yeah pokemon, u fight 8 gym leaders then teh elite 4 and then champion, zelda has you goingtrhough 3 temples to get master sword then a bunch more to fight the boss all exactly same format yet some of the best games made. With CoD its just for money, they touch up the textures a bit, chuck in a few new menu screens n wheel it out for teh idiots to rush out and buy the exact game they been playing for past 5 years.
As has been said, each comapny has its key games that get released. Soul Calibur, Tekken, Ridge Racer, Wipeout, FIFA ect and very few actually change the games as much as the Mario games yet still retaining the core feeling of the very first time you played one. Do we complain about street fighter? i mean good god how many of tehm have there been, its gott abe up there with the amount of skylines in a gran turismo game.
Theres been a few dud mario platformers but even the worse mario game is generally better than the best offering from other comapnies

For me it doesn't seem like an absurd comparison. I had a word with myself in a corner and came to the conclusion that it must be because I only started playing CoD in 2007, when MW1 was released (I wasn't that interested in the WW2 setting of the previous games). Whereas I've been playing 2D Mario since the days of the NES and SNES. MW still feels quite fresh to me, even though I've played many of its FPS-predecessors (the Dooms, Quakes etc.)
The Mario-franchise is among my all-time favourites, but at this point, 2D-Marios are not something I actively play. Apart from a bit of Yoshi's Island, received free courtesy of the 3DS ambassador program... New Super Mario Bros on the DS was ok, but nothing spectacular. A proper sequel to SMB World would make me excited though.

Jolly good. I'm sure it'll be as innovating, inspiring and as full of character as Super Mario Wii and Super Mario 3D Land.

Only twice on the DS! Search "Mario and Luigi DS" and see what comes up. The Bowser game's far the better of the two, by the way.
As for the announcement, I have one thing to say to Nintendo: don't base this on the NSMB series. While competent, they did not scale 2D platforming's heights. No, if you want to impress me (and why wouldn't you?), take a look at what Retro Studios did with DKCR. A new idea almost every level, and rock hard. Bung in Yoshi and some non-linearity and we're onto a winner.
