SSX has an online pass. Surprised?

No, neither are we...

EA's SSX looks like it will be latest game in its library to have one of those pesky online passes attached to new copies. Not exactly earth-shattering news, but news nonetheless.

The folks over at Destructoid have been watching plenty of SSX videos, or at least enough to spot a little on-screen prompt that directs players to an online pass.

By now we're all fully aware of what ramifications an online pass has, but for those scratching their heads the long and short of it all is access to online features such as multiplayer will be locked behind a code included in new copies of the game.

Those who purchase it used will likely be able to purchase an online pass separately on Xbox Live Marketplace or PlayStation Network.

SSX creative director Todd Batty has told us that he hopes the upcoming series reboot 'is the start of a franchise.'

    A little bit.

But then again I always thought Jessica Fletcher was the killer in every episode of Murder, She Wrote. She was well shifty and always in the right place at the right time, that's motive in my eyes.

Am I right in thinking EA allows a temporary pass online so you can get a taste?

There goes another game that I can give to my friends to see if they like it and if they do they can buy but now can't because they need to pay to play online.

Your not the only one, in fact i called it Murder, She Did. She's a multi-mass-murderer that continually gets away with it whilst framing others for the crime. This is the show that set the groundwork for the Dexter series.

As for the online pass, its an EA game. Did anyone expect it to ship without one, seriously?

And yes jim2wheels the EA passes allow you a 24 hour trial (unlike the shoddy PSN Pass games :x ), dunno if its 24 hrs from the time you activate it or 24 hrs game time though.

I'm pretty sure it's real time, 24 hours is a heck of a long time to give away if your gonna use online passes.

    Thanks for the reply.

Can't your friends just come round your house and give it a blast? It usually only takes an hour to know if you like the online component of a game.

Aye or just let them borrow it and try the 24 hr trial.

I'm pretty sure FIFA11 was at least 48hrs, maybe more. I think Hot Pursuit on the 360 gave me a whole week!

presumably if you're getting p**sed off about this you were going to buy it 2nd hand, and no money from second hand sales goes to the developer. So I'm pretty sure EA don't care if you are not going to play their game without giving them any money in return.

I imagine lots will skip the pass and multiplayer or accept a low resale value, Sales will fall as will the RRP. Supply only follows demand and I doubt that people will happily pay what they currently do.

I'll probably buy this new, once it's dropped to sub £20 like they all seem to do these days.

The online pass is a lot better than the 'locking game to a single account' method mentioned regarding the new consoles. At least you can still trade a game requiring an online pass. Things could be worse...

  17. mrdjamk2 on 30 Jan '12 said:

I'd think the online pass should allow the console rather than the individual account access to multi-player features. I have 2 sons and we share the console so that means another £14-£16 to but 2 more online passes.

Is it true that the devs don't even get this cash? I heard it goes to pubs only and if that's true then I hate these things even more now.

Yeah it's true and devs have no say whether their games should have it or not.

    SSX online pass details...

"In SSX, players without an Online Pass are able to compete and play in both of SSX's online game modes, Explore and Global Events with no restrictions," an EA representative explained. "In Global Events, the top finishers from each event are awarded with in-game credits. These in-game credits earned during play will not be awarded to the player if they do not have an Online Pass." If at any point you find yourself in dire need of that currency, redeeming your code or purchasing one from within the game will earn you access to any and all credits you've accrued online.

Don't care about the online pass myself, I was gonna get this new anyway. I've been playing (the actually rather good, especially tilting the nunchuck to steer) SSX Blur on Wii to psyche myself up for the new one. I have been waiting for this game so hard I played through Amped 3 and Shaun Ryder's because there were so few snowboarding games this gen! There's no way I'm not buying it on day one!

  22. Dimpee on 30 Jan '12 said:

Good. Hopefully it will encourage more people to buy new.

    Please tell me you're trolling!

What about people who can't afford new? For a lot of people, the second-hand games market is the only way they get to play the games they want.

    some people are incredible!!
it's not the customers problem if they buy new or used. it's the publishers problem to find away to deal with its used market game competitor.

the customer shouldn't be subjugated for something that's not their problem. if developers and publishers are so poor then they need to solve it themselves, not rape the customer. if the customer finds a bargain they have by law every right to that deal.

i can only assuming you're trolling or one of those fake member profiles that's in the office of a big publisher to help sway public opinion.

That's 100% spot on. They'll say it's for the greater good and that second hand gamers are killing the industry when in reality they just want even more income.

Pre-owned isn't killing the industry, publishers are.

You do realise that publishers provide a lot of the funding for development, yeah?
And that SSX was developed internally at EA?
Not that I'm defending online passes or anything, it just seems like a lot of folks think publishers just stick their logo on the box and take all the money.

Well that's what R* basically done with LA Noire and I would say publishers do reap in all the profits and then decide how much of that makes it's way back to the dev team. Publishers are like gaming banks, they basically buy you up, make you manufacture the game they want (usuallly a get-rich-COD-beater-FPS) and then if it doesn't bypass a million sales then shut down the team and make them all unemployed.

That's not how it works, or at least not how it's supposed to. Contracts are generally in place before anything moves forward, so when publishers do decide to f**k devs over, like the whole Acti withholding bonuses from IW thing, they get taken to court.
Unfortunately, without publishers, most of the stuff you play wouldn't get funding.
