Miyamoto searching for Nintendo's next 'big hit'

A new major hit is 'the solution' to Nintendo's recent shortfalls

Legendary Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto has said he's actively working to create Nintendo's next 'big hit' new franchise.

"I am spending more time than before on finding new ideas for new developments rather than focusing my energy on work in my (development) teams in order to solidify the contents of (existing) franchise titles," he said during the firm's recent financial briefing.

"After all, developing big hit titles must be the solution" he said, in light of the recent losses reported by the company.

"I am acting with the understanding that one big hit title can change multiple phases of a situation in the entertainment business, and I feel that finding such one big hit is my basic job," Miyamoto added.

Do you want a new franchise from Miyamoto, or would you rather him dedicate his time to sequels in his trusted and long-running IPs?

As a Nintendo fan, I will certainly welcome sequels to any long-running Nintendo franchises (Mario, Zelda, Smash Bros, Metroid) and the neglected ones (F-Zero, Waverace). But it would be even better, if they were able to create entirely new franchises specifically tailored to the brand new hardware. New kinds of experiences that would capture the interest of the general public too, like the Wii did. I don't know if the new console's hardware will be revolutionary enough for that though. At least it's going to be in HD this time, so the next Nintendo console may have a longer life-span. Unless everybody has switched to 4K-resolution TVs by 2015...

Miyamoto sounds desperate. I think it's a little too late for Nintendo, the beginning of the end.

(pats delicately on head) You think that, if it keeps you warm at night.

As for Miyamoto's new products, I'm... a little cautious. Sad to say, when Nintendo produce a new IP it tends to be not terribly gamey (Nintendogs), not make it outside Japan (Captain Rainbow) or not sell terribly well (Chibi Robo). And with the Vitality Sensor yet to make an appearance... I'd love a new hero, but an all-new IP needs to be done right.

On the other hand, if we're looking at an upgrade of an old franchise we're in much safer territory. Miyamoto definitely won't be working on a new F-Zero, sadly - it's just not him. After Pit's revival (and Pilotwings', I suppose), could we see the return of the Ice Climbers next?

Two of the most successful consoles of all time, running concurrently, about Ł10bn in the bank and a new handheld that's selling like hotcakes... the beginning of the end????

I wouldn't worry too much Balla... it's just been this gen they've gone casual and I still love Wii Sports/Resort anyway and have had hours and hours of fun with it, regardless of it not being an in depth experience. Maybe less of the Wii Music type though! Miyamoto didn't do nintendogs did he?

Pikmin was amazing, so I'd be happy with something of that calibre.

I think it was his idea. Certainly there was something about him buying a cat before the 3DS sequel was released. And I love Wii Sports too, but when I hear Nintendo talking about new IPs it's not something that gets me overly excited.

EDIT: Checking the Wiki pages, it seems his pets were the inspiration for both. He should go do some falconry - I'd love a bird of prey-based game.

at last! let the youngsters down at Nintendo carry on the great work with existing franchises and give the master a bit of creative freedom to dream up some new great games and characters. this can only be good news, i just can't believe it's taken them so long to get around to it. bodes well for Wii U / 3DS.

Oh I just meant he wasn't director/producer, so I guess he wasn't devoting too much time to it. I don't think much happens at Nintendo without a lot of his input or say so!

if they want a big hit then where is pikmin 3, f-zero "u", earthbound x or a paid for timed exclusive gta 5, heck just make a home console version of pokémon if they want a massive success.
