Iwata ponders 'new stages for Super Mario' as DLC

Nintendo boss speaks in support of the future use of DLC

It seems Nintendo really is ready to jump on board the DLC bandwagon, as boss man Satoru Iwata further talks up the firm's stance on releasing downloadable extras.

While Nintendo, more than most publishers, enjoy long-lasting sales on its major franchise releases, Iwata says DLC is another key way the company can further lengthen its games' time in the spotlight by keeping existing owners talking about it to potential future buyers.

"Even if the game had the sales potential to other new consumers, they rarely actually bought it because the consumers who already had bought it would never talk about it again and the game would be considered an old one," he said, before exampling new levels for a Mario game as a possible DLC offering.

"Having said that, what if we could provide add-on content through the network? ... This is the idea of supplying new stages to Super Mario users who want to play the game more but have completed the game and lost interest in the existing stages. This will not only give us new profits but will lengthen the life of a product, in that it will never be out of fashion and can keep attracting public attention as long as many people play it."

This comes after Nintendo updated the 3DS to add DLC support, and the launch of its newly branded 'Nintendo Network'

with DLC support a key attribute.

All in favour, raise your hand.

I'm amazed it's taken Nintendo this long to work out what this new-fangled DLC business is all about!

All levels, all coins, all gold flags with both Mario and Luigi over here and loved every second of it. So I would lap up any and all new content they sent my way.

Nintendo embracing current trends & technology is a scary thing, at least for the competition! Its strange, its almost as if Nintendo & Microsoft are trading places!

3DS has been designed with always on connectivity in mind. All 3DS titles can support DLC and patches like any other platform.
