SSX multiplayer DOESN'T require online pass

But Credits won't be earned without one, EA explains

A spokesperson for EA Sports has explained that the multiplayer component of SSX will not be locked behind an online pass.

In a statement given to Game Informer EA says players will be able to compete in online game modes, Explore and Global Events without a pass, but credits earned from competing will not be awarded until an online pass is activated.

The in-game credits can be used to purchase extra gear for characters as also to participate in some events.

Here's the official statement:

In SSX, players without an Online Pass are able to compete and play in both of SSX's online game modes, Explore and Global Events with no restrictions. In Global Events, the top finishers from each event are awarded with in-game credits. These in-game credits earned during play will not be awarded to the player if they do not have an Online Pass; these credits will be stored so that at any time, if a player redeems an Online Pass code, all the credits that they had previously earned in Global Events will be immediately awarded to them.

Economy balance makes it possible to unlock all available content and allows you to participate in all event drops across both Explore and Global Events, with credits earned solely in Explore.

Talk of a pre-owned-preventing SSX online pass kicked off yesterday, when a shot of the game's UI clearly displayed a prompt to purchase the pass.

    LOL

Firstly, these credits earned to unlock game content, will be available via micro transaction (EA special again).

40 quid for game 20 quid to unlock goodies

If the "credits" are to determine top players online, this is likely to be hacked like every other XBox high score table!

WTF are you getting "micro transactions" from?

so you can play, but you can't "level up" basically,

not a bad idea actually, it lets pre-owned buyers play and see if they like it enough to pay for the code, and it also allows renters to get the full experience.

You don't know what you're talking about. The credits have no bearing on who's 'top' online.
You can earn more than enough credits in single player to unlock whatever equipment you need.
You cans still level up characters in SP.
All you lose by not registering is the winnings you'd get from online events.
I think it's a good compromise for an annoying pass system that's blatantly here to stay.

Oh jeez I'm lost. One more reason to stick with Tricky.

I can feel the anger in the forum, or the despair should I say.
