The Last of Us - first in-game screenshots

First glimpse of Naughty Dog's much-anticipated survival thriller

As teased earlier, Game Informer has posted the first in-game screenshots of Naughty Dog's The Last of Us, and you can see them below.

The Last of Us Screenshot
In captions that accompany the images, GI says the game "is not one long escort mission", and that while "you won't control Ellie in the game, her AI is one of the team's primary areas of focus", resulting in a smart NPC that keeps up without getting in the way.

Images show that the game will utilize a colourful pallet, which GI points out is in contrast to your typical bleak post-apocalyptic world. It also confirms Pittsburgh as a location in the game.

And finally, it reveals that gameplay will split between gunplay and melee combat, with players forced to scavenge for weapons as melee object break after repeated use.

Check out the shots below.

Hope it isn't too long before we can see it in action.
Those screen shots don't do much for me but the trailer looked really cool.

Not that impressed to be honest. Kinda looks like Crysis 1 with Ellen Page & some bloke with a beard!

It does look rather splendid! Though this is Naughty Dog, and they have raised the bar pretty high for themselves already.

Looking forward to seeing it in action.

Mark Richard Davies, the lead designer of Enslaved is working on the this title which might explain all the similarities.

You know the trailer to this and the trailer to that epic next gen demo doesn't look that far apart to me.

In terms of looks this seems to be pushing the ps3 quite nicely and I'm still sure they haven't tapped all of its resources just yet.

Tramps are surprisingly very kinky like that.

doesn't just look like Drake it looks an awful lot like uncharted.

can easily visualise him sprawling across this landscape in a tomb raider, prince of persia come uncharted style gameplay. am i the only one tired of this?

You sir are an Xbot moron. You are a jealous Xbox owner that plays FIFA and Call of Duty judging by your CVG posts. 2 of the most repetitive game series ever created. I bet you can't wait to kick a ball in the next FIFA game with slightly better graphics or hold the Right Trigger to win in the next CoD game. You would be jizzing in your little panties if this game was coming to your console. But no, you troll the PS3 news pages because the only games you have to look forward to are multi-platform releases and Halo. Unless your are 12 years old I won't mention Kinect. Playstation 3 is definitely the console to own this year and you obviously know that.

You were doing so well UNTIL you said the PS3 was THE console to own and made yourself into a sony fanboy....

I actually own both consoles and BOTH have their Pros and Cons!!! Neither is BETTER than the other but there are things they do better than the other!!!

As for this game, I don't care if it looks a bit like the uncharted series as that is one of the BEST looking games on ANY console. I am really looking forward to this game....

And you have the nerve to call him a fanboy.

OT: I do love the urban decay enviroment, usually post-apocalyptic settings are all grey and debris but it is a lot more intresting when mother nature is reclaiming the land. I agree with the others though, I think ND are reusing the drake model and changing it slightly.

Dunno why they have to explain about the AI, the companions in Uncharted were all awesome AI characters.

WHEEEEEE HEEEEY got a big one here. actually own all 3 of the consols, wii for zelda and mario kart, PS3 for blu-rays, MGS4 and god of war series. i did buy uncharted 1 but not a big fan of the gameplay so never finished it and never bothered with 2 or 3. :D

    who's the fan boy now?

and yes, i LOVE fifa 12, every game is different and playing FUT is so addictive. COD is there for a more "social" form of gaming but i play a heck of a lot more than just those 2 games.

Got to be honest, it does look too much like Uncharted by my reckoning, both in character design and overall visuals. And that is something I have a problem with. As people said - it looks "Lovely". "Lovely is not a word that goes with post-apocalyptic survival that's trying to take a serious route .....

The engine is powerful, no doubt, but you can't just slap an engine that's maximised for colourful jungle and desert and use that for this, come on! It's like using the Spore engine for Diablo 3. I'm not trying to sound all negative, I just think this is a bad start. You don't want it to end up feeling like you're trapped in deserted paradise if you want it to be gritty. It worked in Bulletstorm and Enslaved because of their style, Bulletstorm was one big glorious p**stake

Let's put it this way for those who still aren't with me: Look at the images of Metro 2033 and Last Light. It's "WOW" visual level-wise, but it's not "lovely". They've used the power of the engine to create powerful mood and atmosphere. ND don't seem to have made any real attempt to match the engine with the project in these shots. Hope I'll be proved wrong in time.

Really don't know how someone can entirely judge a game from a few screenshots. Well actually I do. 8)

  27. bamozzy on 6 Feb '12 said:

Why does Post-apocalyptic have to be 'grey' or 'dark'. There are more colours than that!!!! This is set after what ever disaster has occurred and Nature has started to reclaim the planet. Nature itself is not 'grey' (unless you are an elephant!) Uncharted 3 is probably the best looking game on ANY console so I expect this to look equally as brilliant.

Lets just wait until we see it before criticising...(a few screen shots is not enough)

  28. Imaduck on 6 Feb '12 said:

Um, I did mention that it was only judging by these shots, also that I hoped I was proved wrong, no need to get all defensive

  29. TheLastDodo on 6 Feb '12 said:

    Technically isn't this post-post apocalypse?

Post apocalypse is whats left after the apocalypse, like Fallout 3, but nature is coming back in this so isn't this the stage after post apocalypse? :?

There's no HUD or anything. These are not "in-game screenshots". They're just doctored bullshots. Most likely with higher quality textures, more anti-aliasing, farther view distance, etc. than the final game will have.

I don't know! I think BOTH have some quality games - XBLA will hve the new Alan Wake and Trials HD Evolution. Kinect Star Wars looks really good fun (especially for a Kinect Game!!!) and maybe a few other exclusives that may be worth owning as well. I am just glad that I own BOTH to take full advantage of what BOTH have to offer in terms of exclusives.

As I have said in MANY posts - Both consoles are very good - Both have some excellent exclusives and also a few extra perks with exclusive deals too (CoD with xbox, BF3 with PS3 for example). Either way both console owners will get access to some top quality games and have another good year of gaming.
