The Last of Us first details arrive

Naughty Dog reveals some info on setting and mechanics

Yesterday evening we were treated to the first in-game screenshot of Naughty Dog's post-Uncharted venture 'The Last of Us.' Now we've got a few new tid bits of info about the game.

The Last of Us Screenshot
The details, which come by way of US mag Game Informer, reveal that part of the game will take place in Pittsburgh (which according to Wikipedia is the second-largest city in the US Commonwealth of Pennsylvania).

As indicated by the first trailer combat in The Last of Us will be a mixture of gunplay and melee. Weapons will degrade after use and eventually break, forcing players to scavenge for fresh armaments along with supplies.

According to Naughty Dog The Last of Us won't be one long escort mission, while players won't be able to directly control Ellie, the development team has focused on her AI a great deal. GI notes that Ellie carried her weight in they demo they were given.

The "cinematic" third-person adventure is planned for release on PS3 in "late 2012 or early 2013". Get more details here.

Sounds like Uncharted vs Dead Island vs I Am Legend.

A pretty cool combination. Lets see it in action though.

Sounds great, apart from my personal gaming bane: weapon degradation. For a feature that tries to be 'realistic,' it rarely is. Still got hilarious/ infuriating memories of Silent Hill Origins, where a sledgehammer would fall apart after two or three swings.

this will be awesome. good to see brand new IPs that late on in the generation. keeps things fresh amid the barrage of constant sequels.

Glad to hear it won't be an escort mission, that type of gameplay annoys me to no end!

Why do weapons degrade? Unless you are fighting with tissue paper, i'm pretty sure most killing tools are built to last? Even guns have a pretty long shelf life?

Damn, this is looking good. I sold my PS3 after Uncharted 3 because for multi plat I play 360 with my mates and my PS3 had been collecting dust for a while but I don't mind saying now, miiiiiiiiiistaaaaaake. Looks like I'm buying another PS3.

This is what I Am Alive should have been ( god knows they had the time). I'll be keeping an eye on this game, hopefully it delivers in the end product.

Much rather a player controlled partner through psn than an ai partner but hey it works for Uncharted it can work for The Last of Us , either way day 1 buy.

Why don't these guys just make movies?

The non playable companion rings similar to RE4 situation with Leon and Ashley. Hope the weapon degradation works out well and not turn into a steaming pile of 4 uses and it's useless crap. In fact I want to see weapons that break should you overuse it and it breaks under strain, not just magically shatter for no good reason. But visually it looks quite lush and not as fruit colored as some other games that shall remain nameless...cough...Enslaved...cough. I really want to see the dynamics though, hopefully Ellie can lend you a hand in combat especially when you are on the losing side and is able to do so.

Because they're one of the best game developers in the world.

Its amazing what the PS3 can do when a developer actually knows how to use it, glad i held out and kept my PS3 through the bad years now lol

For those who are going on about weapon degradation, while unrealistic it keeps the game balanced and stops the player from using the one weapon throughout the entire game (which would be pretty boring in all fairness). Wood breaks, metal bends, glass breaks, ceramic breaks, blades become blunt over time (if not maintined correctly), and all guns have a service life.

Realistcally guns would get dirt, moisture and dust inside them which can mess up the components over time and thus reduce it's service life.

Anyway this game does look great and Ellie (COUGH DEAD SPACE COUGH) seems to be able to hold her own, I don't want it to become an escort mission like some other survival horror game .....

The game looks fantastic though, a new exclsuive for my PS3 ...
