Hirai: 'Sony must buckle down or we'll be in serious trouble'

Incoming CEO Hirai fed up of facing "one issue after another" at the electronics firm

Sony's next CEO says he faces his toughest challenge yet in attempting to turn around the company's fortunes.

Kaz Hirai is set to replace Howard Stringer as CEO and president in April after the close of the company's current financial year. Sony said this week it expects to report a 220 billion yen ($1.8 billion) loss for the 12 month period, which will be the Tokyo-based firm's fourth annual loss in a row, a first since it was listed in 1958.

Hirai, whose first job at the now defunct music joint venture CBS/Sony saw him working as a translator for bands like the Beastie Boys and Journey, told the Wall Street Journal: "I thought turning around the PlayStation business was going to be the toughest challenge of my career, but I guess not. It's one issue after another. I feel like 'Holy shit, now what?'

Hirai said the company "can't just continue to be a great purveyor of hardware products, even though some people expect us to do that." Instead, its 168,000 employees must work to create and deliver the "user experience".

"We really need to buckle down and be realistic," he said. "I don't think everybody is on board, but I think people are coming around to the idea that if we don't turn this around, we could be sitting in some serious trouble."

I bet the banks kept giving them loans for billions each year, thinking 'oh this is sweet. So much interest!'

    Look at us, banks!

Help the company 'Turn around!' Kaz, tell them 'You're going the wrong way!!' or it will be 'Too bad. You blew it! Better luck next time. Game over'. I'm sure with Kaz's leadership it with make Sony 'INCREDIBLE! You're the real - Raaage racer! No one can stop you!!'.... or you know, err... Words to that effect.

Promoting Hirai as the new CEO is an improvement... Some ideas for the new CEO:

    1) Start preparing (an affordable) PS4 for launch no later than 2013, to avoid arriving late to the party this time around, 2) Release an xperia Play 2 smartphone with a quad-core processor and 720p display, 3) Introduce smart TVs with wireless Sony smartphone and perhaps even Vita "air-play", and/or make the TVs "Playstation-certified" i.e. able to run android games out-of-the-box, 4) introduce a gaming-focused tablet, and 5) secure a number of big Japanese or foreign exclusives for the Launch of the PS4.

Don't know how much those would help, but Sony really has to try some new things and get their act together.

As some one who has always bought Sony consoles, I kinda think we are just sick of the first gen model being top dollar, then six months, to a year later (just an example) it's half the price and looks better? I feel us people who have always spent that crazy price on new consoles, always get ripped of in the end. And the people who waited it out, pay less and get a better looking console, I just don't see any benefits in the short term, so in this case I'm out.

I don't see what they can do. Vita is going to be a failure. Their stuff is too expensive and the games are either too targeted or too generic, lack of quality and lack of focus, from TVs to games I think the whole brand is crumbling.

    Relax.

From a consumer perspective sony seem to lack direction, really just a bunch of random pieces doing whatever they want and lots of half efforts. Hopefully Kaz can get it together, seems like a smart and nice guy.

I thought that too. Kaz seems like someone who isn't living in the past. I think they have been running off in too different many directions. More focus is definitely needed. Personally I think hyping 3D too early was a big mistake.

I knew Sony's bulls**t hubris would caught up with them one day. Bet they're no longer the smug pricks they were 10 years ago. Sometimes you gotta learn humility the hard way.

I like Kaz and having him on helm will hopefuly signal a new era for the company. Just, for the love of Zod,get rid of that fat f**k Jack Tretton.

Imagine there's this old guy who sits on the bridge where you live. He sells the Big Issue, or tries to play the penny whistle with no sense of tune, or just stands there humming to himself and staring into the sky; but he'll always greet you with an absent-minded smile, and ask you how you are like he genuinely wants to know, and when you give him money his gappy grin is nothing short of charming. You probably call him "Mad Jimbo" or something, but in a friendly way.

Until one night, you wake up for no obvious reason and smell stale urine, and hear heavy breathing inches from your ear. Jaw locked up in terror, you open your eyes, and Mad Jimbo's in your room, standing over you with a knife.

That's how the post above made me feel.

Well seeing the prices they charge for their TVs due to brand makes that fact come as no suprise.

"Creating a user experience" - CEO talk about trying to create a similiar marketing culture like Apple. Always maintain that Apple is the greatest marketing company in the world and a tech company second, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that seeing as it works. If you hate Apple don't buy their s**t, simple. Its not their fault the sheeple are so gullible. I think the South Park mickey take last year with the IPad centipede was a brilliant example. The stores laid out in bright white, so that it almost looks like "heaven", your Apple "genius" who can sort any problems you may have with smug self-assurance. The way in which the branding has caught everyone, from the materialistic ghetto kids in poor areas to the Disengenous White Liberal set who base their world view around the Guardian newspaper, its truly remarkable.

Now that "God is dead" (aka Steve Jobs), perhaps Sony and Microsoft have a chance. Ironically, its Sony's old branding that has gotten them in trouble. As a kid, teenager etc. Sony have always promoted the idea that their electronics were of the best quality (TV, Stereo, PS2). I can't remember the name of the old Zaibatsu that used to run the Playstation department when he controversially stated "Yes, PS3 is more expensive, but that will make people work harder to buy one." Its what allowed MS, with an off the shelf hardware beige box that blew up alot initially to take a healthy chunk of market space. Thats just one example. LG, Samsung etc. have done their damage. The recession obviously made things worse. No small wonder when the chinese saturated the market with cheap LCD's we are all currently enjoying, Sony were the first to viciously promote 3D TV and tell us how badly we needed it.

Ken could be Sony's saviour. A "Round eye" like Stringer was always on a hiding to nowhere trying to convince the Japanese overlords of market realities. Being the culturally mixed race love child that he is, perhaps Ken can find a way to get everyone playing from the same sheet.

Here a bit of prejudice for ya: From anecdotal experience, I always picture people who exclusively buy Sony and shop at the Sony Centre to be the sort of blokes who think the epitome of life is to have a Silver Audi parked on their drive. Don't get me wrong, I find the Apple cultists to be just as repellant, but my question is how is Sony going to cross over to reach this group and "buy back" the working-class who used to aspire to buy their phones and consoles, but are now happy with an iphone and an xbox?
