Microsoft 'has to make an Xbox TV'

'They have no choice,' argues Gaikai boss David Perry

Microsoft will have no choice but to make an Xbox-enabled television in the future, Gaikai boss David Perry has said.

Speaking to CVG in our latest industry insight feature, Perry argues that with the emergence of cloud gaming platforms built in to televisions, Microsoft will have to enter the space to compete with Sony and - potentially - Apple.

"Digital TVs are including all of that media stuff," he said. "I think the mistake that the console companies are making is not a mistake of their choice - it's the evolution they have to go through.

"Once the other media hubs can have games - and I don't mean Checkers, but things like Call of Duty - the public will get confused. With that in mind, who is able to make a TV? Sony is already making them, so it will have to take all that stuff into its TVs.

"So: my prediction is that Microsoft will have to make a TV," he added. "What choice do they have? There have been lots of reports that Apple has bought out a large LCD panel-making company. It's pretty obvious that they're on the trail too."

Of course, self-interest underpins Perry's words: Gaikai recently signed a deal to embed its technology in LG's televisions.

As he points out, Apple's also looking increasingly likely to unveil its own TV range, with reports claiming its iTV is due to launch this year.

So the boss of a firm that no-one has heard of is telling one of the most successful companies in history what it must do to survive?

This. Although I'm pretty sure it does something similiar to OnLive (that is, cloud gaming).

Gaikai may be somewhat unheard of, but Dave Perry is not. "Legend" might be too strong a word, but he's certainly an industry veteran, and extremely well known. :)

Yeah, David Perry isn't exactly a nobody...

I suppose I could support this idea, but only if it was one option alongside a conventional console you can use with your existing screen that carries the same functions. I'm happy(ish) to just replace a TV or just replace a console when it goes wrong or needs an upgrade. I would be a lot less willing to replace both at the same time for whatever reason... Not to mention the increased cost of a console/screen hybrid monster.

At some point in the future this will be true. Games systems will just be Apps on your TV.
I cant imagine this being for some years yet though.
Who would MS use to build these TV's, obviously not Sony. Samsung?
If Sony built themselves and MS used Samsung, who would Apple use?

These guys on top are really idiots, honestly, I am blown away at how stupid people are. An xbox tv? Lets all have an xbox tv, apple tv, playstation tv, nintendo tv, you'd have to buy 4 tvs lol If people want an xbox they go out and get one, it will work on any tv, suddenly any tv would be an xbox TV, magic hein. With so many idiots on the business, no wonder games, music and movies are getting duller by the year and people just accept it, because, well, they're getting duller as well. People go out and buy the same fifa every year right? Full price at that. Any guy farting gets famous nowadays, just check how many people really buy farting apps for their phones. Something has to change, but it' not either your xbox or your tv.

With Sony losing money every year on it's TV business I rather think they shouldn't. People won't buy a new TV just for cloud gaming when a cloud gaming console for their existing TV would be around 80-100 pounds.

If Microsoft wants to join the cloud market in TV's they'd just go straight to their friends Samsung who already have Sony's TV section in trouble.

when i can buy AND OWN a game for my tv that i'll be able to play whenever and with whoever i want, and when i can lend it out, trade it in or simply store it in my collection and when i can fill gaps in my collection by buying dirt cheap pre owned games then maybe we can start talking. until then STFU and take your digital delivery with you.

What a lot of bull. Who the f**k wants a small wall mounted LED TV or OLED TV for a set size.
Microsoft would prolly just end up working with Samsung providing a Service for their smart TV's
    Sony allready making TV's
Apple.. HA! If they make just as fruity as the iPhone it break after a week of normal use and cost 3 times then any of the others.

Get me a projector with a consol hooked up to it anyday.

I say.. the day Apple makes consols.. Is the day gamings truly dies.

Is been deing ever since the Dreamcast was pulled from the market.

They did, once. The Bandai Pippin. Apple nearly died instead, it was so bloody awful.

As for Dave Perry, the man has the most amazing history of spouting boll*cks at any given opportunity. File under "As mad as Peter Molyneux".

yup, loved that little white box

why oh why does every bit of tech have to try to do everything? i want a console just for games, a phone just for sms and calls, a tv just for watching stuff on, a proper book made of paper (remember that stuff, anyone?) just to read stories on, a pc to just watch porn on, and a microwave to just heat my tea up in. and a tablet is what fixes my hangovers, not a slower more prone to breaking and bloody awkward to hold laptop. i dont care for the latest try-to-do-it-all-but-it-turns-out-crap-but-i'll-put-a-lower-case-i-in-the-name-to-make-it-cool 4s v3.5 XD or whatever the kool kids carry around today

I've never seen the appeal in TVs that come with Facebook and Twitter built in or any other feature I can do on a laptop or tablet. I just buy a TV for its size and picture quality.
