Skyrim Creation Kit arrives with 'surprise' texture pack

High-res textures and Portal 2's Wheatley makes an appearance

Bethesda has finally released its Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Creation Kit mod tools, along with a couple of previously promised surprises.

The first surprise is a high-res texture pack, which is "allowing players to experience Skyrim as you've never seen it before", and strangle your graphics card like it never has before, too.

It's a free download you can grab through here.

The other surprise is the appearance of Portal 2's lovable bot Wheatley, who has been pulled into the Skyrim world via a mod from Valve and Bethesda. He follows players around the huge open map, looking all kinds of awesome.

Skyrim has also become the second title to be supported by Steam's Workshop, which lets users publish, search for and download user-created content.

The Creation Kit isn't like LittleBigPlanet - it's a serious tool, so if you don't know your stuff you might want to check out the first of many official tutorial videos below, and head through to the source link below for more links to various tutorial blogs.

How about you fix the game crippling lag, constant crashes and other important bulls**t weve had to put up with for 3 months!

I'm willing to bet I won't love the new textures nearly as much as the textures I've already got installed via mods.

Can't help but feel less than "yipee" about this. The game still needs stabilised for f**k sake!
I couldn't run it at all today until now, fiddled with Steam for ages, reset Nvidia settings and now - 5 hour download :?

1.4, did stabilise things a hair, but I still drop from 60+ to 29/30 in spots for no f**king reason! Why r this hapn?!

I must've spent hours tweaking things, telling the game to think etc. to get it to work properly. Nvidia have done more to help me stabilise it than Bethesda. You can finally actually become Thane of Riften by the way, they got round to fixing that horrendous oversight in the latest patch. In other news : I used the "wagon" service for the first time yesterday. Whiterun to Riften, quick and ........ no .... the entire town's population is now outside the town walls and remain there, happy f**king days!

I love the game and setting, but Bethesda should be taken to court for their pathetic QC. Don't know how people who got a console version can even stick it out. The PC version really does allow you to pull it apart and see quite how terribly made it is. :|

This is why I could never be a pc gamer.

I think if I had the technical know-how then it might be different but ultimately I prefer the console protocol of pop n' play. However, some strange people actually enjoy the tweaking so horse for courses I spose...

Creation Kit is fine but that "High-Res" texture pack is the, ugliest high-res texture pack i have ever seen.

Personally I think the textures are nice, but the daft performance loss coupled with the already jittery as f**k engine ... not fine, back to the drawing board, then back to a more reasonable framerate in an hour or so :|

Indeed Pork  I love the simplicity of consoles too. The thing is, with games like Skyrim, it is sometimes worth the fiddling and at least you CAN fiddle to fix things while you wait for the incompetant morons behind the game to finish it :)

The mods pretty much make the PC worth it to me.

the official hd textures are ok but i prefer the community made ones. its just a bit of a pain installing 35+ mods

Thanks for the effort Donkey but I already have those or have used etc. :( The problem is the core game, it is just buggered up!

O mighty slayer of framerate !

Just taking the p**s. It's a great idea, just sadly the game is a bit ..... f**ked .... at the moment, so it needs time to stabilise. Like the Economy! :)
