EA reveals Mass Effect game for iOS

EA has revealed a new Mass Effect game, titled Mass Effect: Infiltrator for iOS devices.

According to the publisher, Infiltrator is a "fully featured iOS third-person shooter", with "stunning graphics and authentic weapons and powers from the Mass Effect series."

According to Kotaku, which attended the press event in New York, the game's plot will involve helping to free prisoners from a hostile Cerberus base, with the players' achievements crossing over as rewards in Mass Effect 3.

"Every completed rescue and intelligence discovery in Infiltrator will increase a player's Galactic Readiness rating directly through the 'Galaxy at War' system in Mass Effect 3," said EA.

The publisher also announced the Mass Effect 'Datapad' app for iOS, which apparently lets you "stay in touch with all of the info in Mass Effect 3," as well as get messages from in-game characters and check the status of the war.

There was no mention of release date, nor for an Android version of either apps.

It doesn't need to conquer the MASS market to be an EFFECTive franchise.

I disagree, the Dead Space iOS game was fairly good, I fully expect this to be the same.

That's got to play horribly on a touchscreen.

I'm very skeptical as to how much of a difference this will actually make. They touted a 'special unlock' for Dead Space 2 with Dead Space iOS, and it ended up being a paultry 1,000 credits. If the iOS Mass Effect game is good on its own merits, fair enough. But I'd advise caution on getting it just for the bonuses it'll carry over to ME3.

I've been thinking of getting this on my Android. I am a big fan of everything Dead Space.
How did you find the controls? All these shooter games tend to look great but controlling them is so frustrating.

I've got Dead Space on iOS and I personally think the controls are brilliant. You can touch anywhere on the left side of the screen to control movement and anywhere on the right side of the screen to control looking. Wherever you put your thumbs down becomes the centre-point for the virtual joystick. You can then tap anywhere on the right side to fire, tilting your device briefly switches the gun between horizontal and vertical mode and you can tap the back of the main character to use the stasis module. Any buttons or controls for doors/lifts/etc are controlled by just tapping them when you're close enough.

Personally I think it's a really elegant control system that works very well, so I'm really excited to see what these guys come up with for Mass Effect. I just hope there's some dialogue trees in there to go along with all the shooting...

As an Android owner I totally agree that these should be released cross platform to properly fuel the EA money hoover but GTA3 shows the problems and effort required to ensure compatibility across the huge and diverse range of handsets out there. The Marketplace was full of 1 star reviews for GTA from people whinging that their handset supposedly supported it but wouldn't run it or force crashed.

In addition even though 3 times as many people supposedly have SOME SORT of Android phone than an iPhone, I wonder how the numbers compare when you take away all the old Android 1.X handsets like the G1 and HTC Hero or factor in the huge number of iPads and iPod Touches people own...

I doubt we'll see Infiltrator on Android which is a shame (see also Arkham City Lockdown) but from the sound of it the data pad would be an easy port and a good marketing tool for the game and any DLC/cash in products so they'd be stupid not to convert it.

Oh well, glad I have a 4G Touch in addition to my Galaxy S2 but I would prefer to get everything on my Droid :-/
