Unreal Engine 4 running on consoles Epic 'can't name yet'

Gears of War maker's new engine set for 'shocking' reveal later this year

Unreal Engine 4 is up and running on next-gen systems, according to Epic vice president Mark Rein.

Speaking at the DICE summit (via LoudMouthedGamers), the executive said the new engine is now running on "systems we can't name yet".

Rein also told G4TV that Unreal Engine 4 will be revealed later this year.

"People are going to be shocked later this year when they see Unreal Engine 4 and how much more profound an effect it will have," he said.

According to rumours in the latest issue of Xbox World magazine, Microsoft's next Xbox is set to include a Wii U-like touchscreen controller.

The mag claims Microsoft is experimenting with a tablet-like controller with a shape closer to Sony's PS Vita than Wii U's "bulky unit".

It goes on to describe the Xbox 720 pad as "an HD screen surrounded by the traditional 360 buttons and sticks."

The next Xbox, no doubt about it, and i said this would most likely be the case and was told i was wrong, there is no way UE4 could run on a new console and produce a game on the quality of the Samaritan demo, way too epensive...well as i said before and will once again, they said it could easily run on a lesser setup than they used for the demo, it would just need a lot of optomisation. Epic are not that close to Sony and it would never be Wii U....so its an easy guess.

Epic playing I know something you don't know. They can't name them because they haven't been given the names they'll launch with and probably won't for a while yet.

It doesn't take a genius to work that out.

True, but its the world we live in, if no one copied Apple, we would be stuck with a choice of the Ipad 1 2 or 3 whatever it will be called, no more phones than an iphone and only one make of car....the list goes on. Its not about the copying, its about who uses the technology the best.

And if the Wii U does not sell, it wont be MS fault because they copied an idea, it will be beacuse Nintendo screwed it up, simple.

Never said it did, but they did say consoles, which i think was just to throw us of the scent. If you look at it from the perspective that Epic said it, then it could be Xbox 720 or PS4 or even, dare i say it, Wii U

Was simply making the point that it probably wouldnt be anything else but the MS machine.

Can you imagine if Epic showed Unreal 4 running on the Wii U at e3?! That would leave even the most cynical haters in dead silence. And I'd love to see it happen!

We all know the next generation consoles are in development. We also know that they will NOT announce specs, details etc in case the opposition change their designs and specs to out 'do' them. At the moment there could be some truth in some of the rumours but also some rubbish too. It is easy to hide some truths in a lot of rubbish!

Maybe some of the rumours are put out to get some feedback. It must be quite difficult to design and develop something when you are so closed off from the consumer who is your target audience. Initially though there are certain things that you know it will do but the additional and possibly innovative things that the consoles could do are still untried and could be a costly gimmick or put off the consumer and push them to the opposition (Not allowing 2nd hand games to be played - Microsoft!!!)

This video has been around for a long time now and I am hoping to see something 'new' with regards to the Unreal engine. Although this looks impressive, it is no more impressive than a CGi movie. I would like to see it in the context of gaming - maybe an actual game play video would be good!

Seeings as my 5870 is already quite a bit more powerful than next gen consoles then the next gen games better run smoothly on newer hardware!.

I'm talking 60fps not this pansy slow 30

Either that, or the name's really strange and it takes months of practice to pronounce correctly.

He doesnt say anything of the sort in regards to Unreal Engine 4 CVG.

He refers to the Unreal Engine as whole running on all consoles including Wii U and some he cant name and then after hes finished talking about the old Unreal Engine he mentions that UE4 will be shown soon.

    Just watched it.

Who's to say it won't just be like the CryEngine 3 where the whole thing is scalable. Saying your able to run an engine on the next gen console doesn't mean it will actually scale stuff up to what a top end pc is capable of running in the same engine.

Would be great to see the Unreal Engine 4 running on a mid-high spec PC that people may actually own !

Are you crazy? First off it, you need to notice the "s" at the end of the word system, "s" last I check, suggest plural. Second, Epic is in the business of making money from middleware, their not going to make something that only works on one system. It will work on every system. Your middleware loses value if its limited to a single platform, it would be limited even with 2 in this multiplat market.

Your right, i did indeed notice the S, bit late after i had posted, and i stand humbled and corrected! A better way to put it would have been that its prob going to appear on the next Xbox first, Epic have always been more cosy with MS than any other company (console Manufacturer) and you cant say im wrong about that! I have no doubt it will appear on the other machines, but will most likely debut on the next Xbox....that ok for you? :)

It could also be an upgraded Onlive system not announced yet, with the processing done in the cloud, or even a console from Apple that has not yet been confirmed, only time will tell, should be a good rumour building exercise leading up to E3.

History tells us its the next XBOX though, what with Epic's input with the 360 asking for 512MB instead of the proposed 256MB RAM on the original design, which gladly was the correct decision in the end, otherwise we would be in the same boat as PS3 owners.

This is why I prefer consoles over PCs. They actually show their full potential of graphics and are truly next generation. It seems that Pcs are more towards where all the testing ground happens. PC gamers get all the bugs and don't get a full use of their graphics cards. While consoles get ironed out graphics with little or no bugs or hasttle. Pretty sad, considering not too long ago before the xbox/ps2 came out, it was the other way around.
I've yet to see a direct x11 game that actually makes good use of my graphics card. Not to mention when we get there, my graphics card will run at 5fps maximum and I'll be forced to get kepler or maxwell.

Stop supporting ATI/NVIDIA, they are causing more harm than good.
