Disappointing sales of underrated Xbox 360 and PS3 adventure, Enslaved saw a planned multiplayer mode get cut, its developer has revealed.

Enslaved received a good reception from critics - and even picked up a Writer's Guild Award for Best Video Game - despite disappointing sales.
Still, creative director Tameem Antoniades seems undecided about its legacy.
He told Edge: "I'm not sure. We wanted to create affecting characters that felt more like real people than cardboard cutouts. If the game had been more successful, perhaps other games would follow suit and deem it a worthwhile pursuit.
"But perhaps instead it will be held as an example of why it doesn't matter. Either way, it won't stop us from trying. I truly believe characters and story can elevate the gameplay and affect people in deep and satisfying ways."
Ninja Theory is currently working on DMC for Capcom.

what a shame, it was a decent game in my opinion. I personally rented it, loved it that much i then went out and BOUGHT it - BRAND NEW by the way. But yet these devs think that the rental and used markets harm the industry. IDIOTS.
I hope they do make another one as there is only so much flaming War/Army shooters one can play. I want more games with a bit of variety

I loved the demo and wanted to play more but all I can say was that the launch window wasn't good since I was addicted to Red Dead Redemption Multiplayer at the time and then eventually I forgot about the game.

One of the best games i've played in recent years, the characters and story were great, sometimes people want too much from a game, and as a result end up slating it because of what it doesn't do, rather than what it does.

It's a shame these cinematic games sell so much less than all the shooters we have, it just says to publishers/developers that all gamers want, is a shooter.
I have to disagree that their "IDIOTS", not everyone who rents a game then goes out and buys a new copy...I would say very few do. Heavenly Sword (Ninja Theory's other game) was great too but that didn't sell well, I bought my copy second hand...not a penny going to them.
I do feel bad for doing that but I can't find a new copy any more, I wasn't prepared to buy £40 at the time for a game which was famous for being short and I saw it for under a fiver!
I don't want second hand gaming to die as I think it does help the industry in some ways but I'm not ignorant enough to not see that it also hurts it. I personally think that any distributor who sells pre-owned games should pay a small fee to the publishers/developers, instead of keeping all the profits for themselves.

All i can say is that this game is £11.00 brand new from play.com. If you want a blatant bargain then you really cant go wrong for £11.00.

I agree!!! I do not want to see the second hand market disappear either! If I have a game I no longer play or want to keep then I want to be able to trade it in. Also some games in a franchise or more obscure titles are not easy to pick up new anymore so it is an option to find them. I also believe that the 2nd hand market is a great way to allow gamers to try games they wouldn't normally buy - this in turn may lead to those gamers buying further titles NEW in the future. If the 2nd hand market disappears then I can see the future of gaming becoming very predictable (by that I mean that only established franchises like CoD, Fifa etc as new IP's would struggle to establish themselves) and also a lot of companies disappearing too.
I also agree that developers should get some revenue from the 2nd hand market - Maybe a licence to sell 2nd hand games would help the developers. (I don't see EA or Activision struggling though with the current set up!!!) I also disagree with the whole online pass system!!!! Why take away from the game??? Instead offer more REWARDS for loyal customers who do buy new like exclusive in-game items that show others your loyalty or the first DLC? RPG games could give you exclusive Armour for example that show you bought the game NEW! Call of Duty has never used an online pass system!! Instead it offered exclusive emblems, titles and avatar or theme (depending on console) for people who bought Hardened editions and subscribed to Elite. They did not take away from the game!!

I'm looking at my copy of Enslaved on the shelf as I type this, bought following the inevitable price drop and still in its wrapper.
Really looking forward to cracking it open v soon as I carry on my 2012 resolution of 'Pile of Shame first, new titles when they're cheaper' as I've heard many a good thing about it.
Of all the interesting and new IPs that make it to the shops, only a few will ever make that big step into Franchiseland particularly in the current economic climate. They would also probably need a big name publisher behind them too and even then that's no guarantee (Take EA for example and Dead Space and Mirror's Edge's differing histories).
I just hope the new ideas do keep coming though, had a dream the other night of a gaming world filled only with CoD and it sure wasn't pretty.

I did love Enslaved, but I thought that the characters and the story was as generic as it came. I seriously have no idea why it gets so much praise for both of those things, it's a million miles below your average movie, imo. The beautiful game world is what made it stand out for me.

I was about to say that. It's a fecking bargain. Also the dlc they did release was bloody brilliant. maybe if we can get enough people to buy it now it might show that there is interest for more.
Come on gameland. there's arcade/psn games that cost more. £11. thats a round at the pub. the cost of a dvd.
If you don't own this masterpiece you have no excuse.

nearly 500,000 and they are moaning look..... they have to realize this was a new ip, it had no guns in it, was made by and unhousehold dev, very little promotion i mean how much did they expect it to sell? 5 million?

It IS a great game, and its a victim of the publishers releasing it at a bad time, that said, anyone who has an interest in "proper" gaming, not the shovelware, multi-billion selling, craptastic, shout-fests that are COD et al, should buy it, and while you are at it, buy Shadows of the damned, Majin, El Shaddi, and the rest of the criminally under sold games that were released last year, most of them can be picked up for less than a tenner.
If it carries on we are going to lose games like those above that are a little bit different, and breath a bit of originallity and freshness into gaming, otherwise we are just going to get the same old safe, rubbish that "gamers" these days seem to lap up.

They moved from the PS3 and didn't bother making a sequel to Heavenly Sword because it didn't sell enough, it sold over a million copies. They hoped they would sell considerably more by going multi-platform, yet sold half as many copies. My point? MAKE A SEQUEL FOR HEAVENLY SWORD!
kirankara on 15 Feb '12 said:
All depends on what it cost them to make game though, if that 500, 00 only covered costs or even lost mONEY, then it makes sense they are disappointed. With games costing upwards of 30-40 million to produce these days, any wonder people do COD 200000000+1 and Halo 600000+1 etc???
kirankara on 15 Feb '12 said:
I also have no issues with online passes until better solution is found. Choices are smple, buy new or pay the £5 or so it costs to play game online, at least giving devs a cut of profits on second hand games and allowing them to account for online costs of games. Seems fair to me.
WHERESMYMONKEY on 15 Feb '12 said:
It's completely out of Nija Theory's hands. Sony own the ip and always have. the reason heavenly sword's not getting a sequel is down to Sony not ninja theory.
Also on a personal note, it makes no damn sense to give it one. Think about it. Enslaved was left open for a sequel. There's a lot of unanswered questions. Heavenly sword is all wrapped up in a neat little bow.
slick loose on 15 Feb '12 said:
*Puts on disagreement hat*
Well, here is what they said back when the game was released.
So the sequel is already written, then they went on to say this...
As for being tied up in a bow, almost but not quiet. If you remember rightly, you learn King Bohan has a boss himself, it is he who gives Bohan God like powers at the end of the game. We never learn who this is, except he took the form a of a black bird. Clearly his identity could be explored further.

Well why dont you put the game up on PSN/Live make the first few chapters as a free download for all and then sell the full game unlock for ten clams...it could be that simple

£30-£40 million to make a game then they need to look at the costs....
