Notch 'can do' $13 million Psychonauts 2 budget

Talks between the Minecraft man and Tim Schafer over potential sequel ongoing

Minecraft creator Markus 'Notch' Persson has said he could stump up the $13 million budget Double Fine Productions founder Tim Schafer thinks is necessary to fund Psychonauts 2.

Earlier this month Schafer said he'd unsuccessfully attempted to pitch a sequel to cult classic platformer Psychonauts to publishers multiple times, leading Notch to offer his help in getting the project off the ground.

Talks between the two parties over the potential game largely remain private - Notch apparently apologised to Schafer for making public comments on the situation that subsequently blew up on the internet - but the Double Fine man did tell Kotaku how he responded to Notch's offer.

"I was like, 'I don't think you can make [it] for a million dollars.' The original game was, I think, $13 million, I think you have to match the original game. As soon as I mentioned the amount of money he said, 'Yeah, I can do that.'"

Schafer added of Notch and Minecraft: "He's been pretty successful. And, when you look into it, it's a really inspiring story. He's just a regular guy. He didn't do anything sleazy to get it. He just made it himself, distributed it himself, it's a great story. I think we have a lot to learn from him, so I'd like to do something with him.

"And I'd like to make Psychonauts 2."
