Sony is to release a new PS3 firmware update today.

Strangely, Sony said the "update is optional in the US and Canada" and "is not mandatory to connect to PSN".
Could it be related to Vita's launch next week? Let us know if you notice any changes once you've downloaded it.
PS3 firmware update v4.10, which launched last week, updated the PS3 internet browser with "improved display speed", and officially renamed PSN accounts Sony Entertainment Network ones.

Hopefully it fixes the £90 Sony wireless 7.1 stereo headset that got ruined from 4.10 update.

The only thing that I'm STILL waiting for Sony, is the option to change the colour of the text on the XMB. Being stuck with white is ridiculous and there's tons of wallpapers and themes I have that I can't use because I can't see what I'm looking for properly.
Seriously, how hard is it to give us this simple option?

ah those f**king updates. one of the main reasons why i prefer the xbox. almost every time i fire up the ps3 there's a mandatory update that takes forever. and those game installs...

DLing it now, but why the f**k is there another update so soon? It's bulls**t, f**king downloaded one recently and now another one. They need to make sure the ones they release actually f**king work before sending it out the door.

Agree updates are bit of pain in scrotum, but Id start installing your games on 360 too, as preserves your laser.

Agreed that they should test properly first, but i'm hoping this one is coming along so quickly to fix the last one breakinng the official headphones.
I hope it does fix them as I was planning on taking mine back this weekend.

I wish Sony would release larger updates less frequently. I don't use my PS3 a huge amount and when I turn it on there's often an update to download and I lose interest, as before it finishes downloading I've already turned my Xbox 360 on!

I agree it'd be handy, although I'm not that bothered. It's just I got lovely Ico/SotC themes and you can barely read the text on the menus at some points!
They are a bit frequent and I never see any real benefit from them personally, but they only take about ten mins to download and install. The only time they're really annoying is if you've got about thirty minutes to kill and you fancy a quick blast on summat. And that's only happened once to me in about 18 months of owning a PS3.

All you need to do is turn down the brightness (in the theme / colour) settings and the text can then be read above the background / theme. Simples

This is one of the reasons that my ps3 don't get turned on that much. The download takes an age, shame cos there are some really good games. All worth it in the end

When I know that there is an update, I switch on my PS3 to do it while I do something else - gives me a chance to see the wife and kids
It's very handy that you can get it to update and then switch itself off afterwards. As long as you aren't gaming online you can have a good session and then get it to do the update when you go to bed or finish. It's really not that bad!

OH GOD, ANOTHER UPDATE, WAH WAH WAH, WHY DO SONY RELEASE UPDATES? WHY CAN'T THEY JUST LEAVE THE PS3 ALONE FOR A WHILE, THEN WAIT FOR US, THE IDIOT PUBLIC, TO TELL THEM WHEN TO RELEASE THEIR UPDATE! WAH WAH WAH! IT SUCKS BECAUSE I'M SO IMPORTANT AND BUSY THAT I DONT HAVE TIME TO UPDATE MY CONSOLE! IT'S NOT LIKE I COULD DOWNLOAD THE UPDATE ON MY PC AND TRANSFER IT TO MY PS3 INSTEAD OF DOWNLOADING IT STRAIGHT TO THE CONSOLE, THEREBY SAVING TIME DURING MY DAILY ROUTINE OF BEING AN INTERNET COMMENTER WITH THE MOST IMPORTANT OPINION IN THE WORLD! f**king WAH WAH f**king WAH!
Idiots!
