Metro: Last Light - Why this Russian 'Bioshock' is one to watch

Into the darkness once again...

The latest issue of Xbox World, featuring extensive coverage of Ghost Recon: Future Soldier and the hottest games of 2012, is on sale now.

Sometimes PC-centric games struggle to find an audience on consoles. Metro 2033 was an ambitious and unashamedly different post-apocalyptic shooter that didn't make any concessions for the console crowd. With scarce ammunition, enemies that absorbed your bullets and huge intricate levels, it was the direct opposite to Call of Duty's guns-blazing rollercoaster ride.

Metro: Last Light, a direct sequel continuing protagonist Artyom's trek through Moscow's subways, hopes to improve on the original through accessibility.

The first game's biggest flaw was the sheer number of bullets needed to even lightly damage your target, direct headshot or not. Sneaking past or avoiding enemies was always preferable. Here, shooting feels like a valid option rather than a last resort, and weapons pack a more vicious punch, dropping foes - both human and humanoid - quickly and with a satisfying thump.

You can still sneak past large groups of enemies if you delve deep enough into the labyrinthine levels, carefully planning guerilla-style assaults from the shadows. The difference is that if you're caught, you can now shoot your way to safety.

The extra polish means it's a real step up from the first game. It hasn't been dumbed down; it's been refined to make a better overall experience. Combine that with an atmosphere that approaches Valve levels of panache, and stunning graphics that question the need for the next gen and Metro: Last Light could be one of this year's standout titles.

Absolutely loved the first one. I'm looking forward to the next one but i'm disapointed that THQ has forced them into adding multiplayer that will probably be non existant 3 months after release.
