Call of Duty Vita confirmed for autumn release

"Will be a game-changer for the platform", says Sony

The previously confirmed but utter unspecified 'Call of Duty' game for Vita will be out this autumn.

PS Vita Screenshot
SCEA's new SVP of PlayStation brand marketing, Guy Longworth, made the revelation when he told GameTrailers that his teenage sons, being FPS fans, are looking forward to Call of Duty in autumn.

"Of course in the autumn, they're really looking forward to Call of Duty on Vita," he said, adding, "and we think that's going to be an absolute game-changer for the platform."

Longworth wouldn't be pushed into revealing what the actual title will be, although an autumn launch puts it before the expected November release of this year's CoD title (heavily rumoured to be Black Ops 2).

That said, it could be either be a portable re-working of a currently released CoD title or an entirely original project.

Could be the "leaked" Cod 4 on vita that has been floating around the internets, Which was the only Cod I really liked, may have to pick up a vita for that, oh and not forgetting Gravity Rush and Uncharted! Now wheres that price drop...

Like I said before, this could be the game to get the ball rolling for Vita in the US & Europe. The concept of portable COD mp will go down well for many customers.

I'm sure there was a COD DS, that had multiplayer, which I remember Nintendo gamer giving a low score. Hate COD, so I will never buy a vita for that.

I'd bet my balls that there will be a 3ds version aswell. And I dont see it doing well on either platform.

This will go down well, you could actually play it properly as well having 2 analog sticks. Kids will be all over this.

Sounds good anything hat will sell Vita to the masses is a good thing.

But November is in Autumn if i'm not mistaken?

I can almost guarantee it'll be the same version as the 360/ps3 i.e Black Ops 2.

If it's a brand new COD game then i'll eat my hat, your hat and Abraham Lincolns top hat. 8)

If this is going to be the same game as the November release and stats etc are cross platform then this'll be a huge system seller for the Vita.

And do you expect all these people to buy two copies of the game? I sure as hell dont expect Activision to do the buy the PS3 version and get the Vita version for free malarky.

I dont believe this is going to sell aswell as people expect. It wont be the western Monster Hunter.

I agree the draw to COD is not the game it's PSN and Live.

Maybe not everyone to buy 2 copies but if they did a bundle for £70 I'd snap there arm off for it.

Of course it wont be the western monster hunter. Activision have hundreds of people working on call of duty but they aren't going to put much effort into a vita cod unless sony is paying for it. And if it's the same thing then it means nothing, if it's hyped to oblivion then it might do some good. Either way it's not going to hurt.

It's the multiplayer, doesn't matter what network its connected to, either way its connected to PSN anyway.

That is true. And it has crossgame chat so psn users can yell at their friends and strangers.

It doesn't appear to be a big deal porting PS3 games to the Vita and that is a big plus for it. I wouldn't hesitate to spend another £10 on top for cross-play for games I really want.

It also sounds a bit lame for someone at Sony pimping COD as a game changer because that somewhat discredits the existing line up - particularly Sony's own titles. :?

What would be a game changer for me is not COD. Diabalo 3 would be so sweet on a PS Vita :|

There's only one way to screw up CoD on Vita.

Will Sony snatch defeat from the jaws of victory?

i think it should be black ops 2 if its got nothing to do with the one that comes out at the end of the year i don't think it will be a hit.

Any game to add to my Vita collection makes me happy. I imagine it would be same as for consoles instead of a "mobilized" version. Hopefully it is cross platform and I can just buy a Vita version and play my PS3 friends. COD isn't my thing really but again, I am happy to see any major franchise make it onto my sexy new portable!
Now then, hows that Bioshock and Assassins Creed coming along?

  19. laslowoodbine on 19 Feb '12 said:

I wouldn't be suprised if this is a WW2 Call of duty, after seeing the Vita's launch advert showing some relation to a military WW2 game. I know nothing of the timeline of Blops 2 however I doubt the the game would be a crossplay tie as that would mean.a huge coo to Sony on a franchise that MS see as their own. With all the timed exclusives they have I very much doubt MS would let that happen.

    Until we know a few things, this could go either way. But look at the obvious points;
    A) A COD game on Vita is really unlikely to be of the same low graphical & thematic standard as a DS title. It's far more likely to be a port or standalone with high graphic standards & a story that fits its adult nature.
    B) Vita can do cross-platform and high-quality, free from lag online play. If Sony aren't pitching this into the deal, I'd be stunned. And as with Wipeout, the 2 games don't have to share the complete roster of maps to still have enough maps to satisfy fans.
    C) Not least, COD is now a MONSTER. Someone said above about people being sniffy about buying a PS3 and a Vita copy of the game; this is COD! Just think of what COD fans will think of being able to continue to work towards a prestige while at school or work. No matter what your view, this is a series that, since Modern Warfare came out, has consistently won Best Game of All Time awards (for Black Ops?? Really??) and many other plaudits that are way beyond a sensible reaction to the actual quality of the games.
Mark my words, if Sony gets this right, this will absolutely be a game changer for the Vita.

I would, unsurprisingly, judge COD on Vita as a big plus, along with FIFA, GT and Street Fighter. If done well it would certainly be attractive, I think if people think it would not be a major incentive for gamers adopting the new system you are either naive or just blindingly biased.

  22. Reegeee on 19 Feb '12 said:

It HAS to be the most recent one to be a system seller, but if it is as DJ said the dual analogues will do it.

I can imagine a lot of people trying a vita in store and COD could well be the game to swing them.

It sounds stupid cos it will be just the same as what they can play at home, but this is the sort of stupid s**t people can't get enough of, and to be fair I can see why. WLAN COD at dinner time in the office or at school could be a big deal.

  23. adison on 19 Feb '12 said:

It seems obvious that it will be Black ops 2 and that the game changer will be the ability to play either on your PS3 or Vita with the same PSN account there for being able to level up as and where you want.

  24. nuggit3000 on 19 Feb '12 said:

It has to be the version being released this year (Black ops 2?) otherwise whats the point.
Maybe a unique handheld game would work, but not a port of a past game. Im sure anyone who wants to play a past game either has it or could pick it up for a fiver off eBay.

It would be good if you could play online cross platform, or even buy once play twice, but I doubt that. Maybe a bundle for £70 RRP (£40-50 in Tesco/ASDA)

Failing the above, Activision better make the PS3 version compatible with remote play, so I can at least play the new game on a Vita with the PS3 running while the wife watches Eastenders... This will mean more than timed exclusives and make Sony "the best place to play CoD"

Oh.. and to the guy who said it will be s**t because the DS had a s**t CoD game... I didnt realise the DS had a console perfect port and have two analoge sticks.

It NEEDS to have multiplayer but after seeing some of the decisions that have been made lately regarding the Vita, it's certainly possible that multiplayer may not be included, like what happened with ModNation Vita. Hopefully that was just a stupid decision by the developer and not a Sony directive.

A portable CoD multiplayer is a license to print money but this is Sony we're talking about, that launched a new platform in Japan without any games that are popular in the Japanese market.

Keep your feet on the ground until Activision have something to announce.

  26. Reegeee on 19 Feb '12 said:

Very true as the devs have not had time. The FIFA game that was released apparently is not a copy of FIFA 12 but FIFA 11, and so the new control system is not present.

I think it will surely have online, but I wouldn't be entirely surprised if it was the original Black Ops or MW3. I think it would be a great thing for COD elite though so Activision should take it seriously. Elite is about the social structure, so having it on something that can go here and there would be a big thing for them.

Nah it was a decision made for a rushed game, likely because sony demanded it be ready for launch. Trust me, the developers aren't stupid, they just rushed a game out for launch and will likely patch the f**k out of it if they aren't busy with sleeping dogs or WASTING f**king TIME ON LITTLEBIGPLANET KARTING.

Activision know what it takes to make money, what it really comes down to is whether they see it as worth the effort or not. It's sony's job to make the case that it is.

  29. TheLastDodo on 19 Feb '12 said:

Is it technically possible to patch in multiplayer post launch?

  30. Fr33Kye on 19 Feb '12 said:

Yep yep, at least i'm pretty sure it is. They have multiplayer just not online multiplayer. They only have local multiplayer and claim they'll add online if there is a demand.

I fully believe that a COD game with a proper multi-player mode will be the system seller Sony are looking for. I think this is going to be the Monster Hunter of the West.
