Research from video game price comparison website Playr2.com has found that 32 percent of 1,321 PS3 owners polled are "seriously considering" buying a PlayStation Vita.

Asked why they intend to purchase the handheld, 62 percent said they "wanted a powerful handheld console". Six percent said they will sell their current PlayStation console in order to purchase a Vita.
Playr2.com founder Simon Kilby said: "Sony's promotional machine has gone into overdrive with the launch this week of the new Vita console, and it seems that it's certainly drummed up excitement amongst UK gamers.
"We really wanted to look into how current PlayStation owners felt about the new launch and if they intended to buy, and to see that as many as a third of current PlayStation owners intend to purchase a console pays testament to the buzz the launch has created amongst the gaming community."

The reason I'm going all out with the Vita (3G) is because of the relationship it has with the PS3 the fact I can get trophies and cross-play was a huge factor in my decision, With out a doubt the Vita is essential especially if you own a PS3.

Critical and analytical investigation of source: ACTIVATE!
Ah. Turns out its a 'marketplace' as well as price comparison site.
Deductive analysis: vested interest in selling all consoles.
Conclusion: you will never see a survey from this site claiming people won't buy x, y or z console.
Advance the matter: everybody move along.
P.S. CVG: your job is not simply to report the news but also make editorial comment. Ask questions; demand answers; hassle the people who come out with this stuff. If you can't, then do rhetorically it in the article. Never trust anything anyone says. Search for the truth maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan!
Maybe I'm being a bit mean. But I really shouldn't have had to do what I did even if it did just take 9s because as it stands the article is ripe for use and abuse by the fanboy. And we all have a common duty to eradicate that particular infestation.
Also. I can't actually find the survey in question. Help me out anyone?

I can say "without a doubt" that the Vita is not essential, its a luxury item. A very luxury item at that price as well. Also don't get me started on the memory card prices.
After being so disappointed with the original PSP i'd never spend silly money on handheld gaming again, christ for the majority its just gonna be used when going for a dump anyway, surely your smartphone can keep you occupied for that long. Same goes for those that will use it for commuting. A lot will probably use it in the living room instead of turning their PS3's on as well which kinda defeats the purpose of it being a "on the move" accessory and also negates the cross play feature.

My thoughts are, wise tha f**k up! Essential?? No chance.
I'm too old for a handheld, think it's too expensive and da really want to play mini and inferior versions of games I already or will own on my PS3. If the missus is on the TV I game on my PC, I drive so no playing it on the bus, too expensive to buy for playing for five minutes while I take a dump. As well as their consoles how do adults find the time to game on a handheld too?
Also I am concerened about the folk mentioned in the article who are selling their PS3 to buy a Vita. Each to their own but seems stupid to me.

Primarily, price, then quality of release titles. I was also slightly irked that the original "footage" from Uncharted turned out to be rather misleading.

It is already hard to justify 40-50 quid for PS3, leave alone handheld.
how come Hollywood movies can go for 20 quid mark but games are so freaking expensive ??????

PS Vita dose not produce inferior products there just as good as the PS3 versions their not just sun-par releases to cash in on the Vita. I suppose essential though was too strong a word, but let me put it in better context, for me personally it is, as It's exactly what I want from a handheld device it's not a gimmick, it's a part of the PS3. I'm not the owner of a smartphone so this is very appealing to me. It's a world away from the PSP and I can see why one would be reluctant to invest in something like this considering it's past ventures, but after I got to play it myself it changed my mind and showed me that Sony learned from their mistakes.
I understand peoples cynicism in some cases rather aggressive attitudes to opinions and the Vita, but it's all about preference. And it seems some people are out of the PS Vita's aimed demographics.

To be fair I haven't played a Vita but if we take Uncharted Vita as an example going by word of mouth, reviews etc it's an Uncharted for handhelds that disna match it's console sibling, but is - and here's the key part - a brilliant version for handhelds. Nothing interests me about it (The Vita) at all.
But look like you say I ain't the target demographic and you clearly are so like I said each to their own and if you like it then great and I hope you enjoy it mate.

I don't really like handhelds.
Cross-play is an attractive feature but not something that will drive me to buy a Vita. I though MOVE been included in many of the games I buy might have the same effect, but I now own nearly 10Move games and still have very little interest in buying that other than to "try it out".
StonecoldMC on 21 Feb '12 said:
Absolutely JD. And in no way shape or form was I having a go at Jamie!

Then go to the manager all outraged and say I'm suing for sexual harassment. But I'll settle out of court for a Vita, 3 games and a memory card.

I own PS3/Wii/360/DS & now Vita. Why this particular guy decided to buy one is his own. he is excited for his new console as any games would be when they get one. Vita is a fantastic kit and i can't dispute that earning trophies on the go is awesome. As for the connectivity with PS3, that hasn't officially begun yet. The games that support this don't come out until today when Sony does update so I cant really say much about that yet. I CAN say that Remote Play is still less than spectacular right now but again, I will give Sony a chance to get the console out the door before hammering on it too much.
You know, this was a console i was skeptical about for some time. For one, I couldn't really figure out where i would fit this into my life. Once I got it in my hands... All doubts washed away. I am almost always on it for at least a few hours a day while ids are watching cartoons, wife is watching crap, while cooking dinner, while going poo and basically any free second I can think of to power this baby up.
Games are appropriately priced and almost all i have tried are fun to play. Uncharted is unrivaled and is one of the best in the series. The list of games that i want is staggering and I almost can't justify buying a game for any of my other consoles right now because. Unit 13, Mortal Kombat, Gravity Rush, Bioshock, Resistance and on and on and on.
I really hope that the Vita is a success, it deserves to be. It is without a doubt the best console I have ever played and the only people who have anything bad to say about Vita are the people who either can't afford it, or they are to close minded to try give it the chance and that is their own loss.
jdkoke on 21 Feb '12 said:
Hard to take you seriously after this comment. Trophies on the go, whoop-di-doo!
But this wins it. Look if you think it's the best console ever then honestly knock yersel oot but don't be a prick - almost fanboyish one at that - about it. If i wanted it I could afford it and am nae being closed minded. In fact the comments in this article from nearly everyone (ipad nutter aside) have been reasoned and nae close minded at all. I, in my opinion am too old for handhelds, I don't have any spare gaming time to p**s about on them as my home consoles and PC have a big enough backlog as it is. And I just don't want one, it holds no appeal to me.
I get that for some folk wi low self esteem that if someone disna like the electrical product they buy then it's reason for them to be a dick but really it's nae. You enjoy it but don't be trying to tell me what I think or how I should think. Or most amusingly that I'm losing out

@Stonecold
I'll give you my view.
I fit perfectly into the demographic that Sony are aiming for, I own a PS3 (as well as having owned a PS and a PS2) and I'm 25 years old, without coming across as bragging I could afford to go out tomorrow and buy a Vita and Uncharted and whatever ModNation.
But I don't want to.
I don't want to pay 300 quid to play watered down versions of PS3 games, prices aside, this is my main hang up on the Vita at this juncture, I'd be paying out near enough 300 quid again for inferior versions of games I already own/have owned.
Now I think the Vita is a fantastic bit of kit, from what I've observed of what the staff in my local Gamestation showed me, but I'm more than happy to wait for a significant price drop on the Vita itself and the games, aswell as waiting for more 'brand new' games like Escape Plan and Gravity Rush to be announced.
Just my thoughts.

The hardware is a great piece of kit... but the poll itself, the shallowness of it and it's source, make this poll essentially worthless. The proof will be in when it comes out in the UK. It's fun to analyse, and polls are fun... but i@d put my last 32p and pack of strawberry laces that these stats don't match up to the figures at launch. The people vested in buying at launch will jump straight on these polls. The polls are usually a case of early adopters vs PSV haters!

The third of me that is seriously considering getting a PSVita is below my belly button and above my knees
I just got a Xperia Mini Pro from Tesco Mobile for my girlfriend and that was £129.
The PS Vita is available from £197 on launch day, the memory cards will eventually be as cheap as chips and the pricing of the download games is genuinely attractive. If you compare it to an iPad2, or an iPod Touch or even the xPeria Play I think it is brilliant value.
Still I am in no rush but I will definitely pick one up when it is more mature and stable.
KK-Headcharge78 on 21 Feb '12 said:
You can spin any survey of this ilk to your advantage, while I don't doubt people answered positively to the question such a small catchment, no detail of demographic, culture, economic state or geography renders it entirely pointless for either side of the argument.
Personally I'm with Dodo, I actually think it is a gimmick, a luxury in a market that needs anything but a luxury at the moment. Sure it looks nice but I see it as a glorified PSP. I'd rather buy a PS3 myself as that would offer far more gaming enjoyment even though I already own an Xbox.
MattSwain on 21 Feb '12 said:
I have no doubts that Vita is a great bit of kit but I think Sony are behind the times with their thinking. Yes is probably is the most powerful handheld available today, but 6 months from now there'll be a new iPhone which will close the gap, and in 18 months another, in 30 months another etc my point being that the other mobile devices are evolving and the Vita is set in stone dated 2012.
The launch titles are uninspiring. Oh great I can pay premium prices for another version of Fifa that's based on the console version of 12 months ago, or another version of Wipeout, or Everybodys Golf or Lumines. Individually they may be great but I've played them all before.
I'm not having a go at anyone who buys a Vita, it will be right for some people and their lifestyles. Whether that's enough people to make the Vita profitable I'm not so sure. I'm going to stick with my iPhone for when I'm mobile (I don't want to carry 2 devices either) and my PS3.

I've just bought a PS3 (actually i traded my 3ds & revelations for it at game station, straight swap pretty much) and I'm not sure if I fall into any demographic of sonys for this device. I'm mid 30s, married, 2 kids and I have to think very carefully about what I spend my hard earned money on. It's taken me until now to buy a PS3 as it's finally hit the magic "£150 with 2 games" mark that I tend to use to gauge consoles on.
I've had a go on a PS Vita at game station and both Hot Shots Golf and Wipeout were pretty cool but not worth me chucking upwards of £250 for a console with 1 game. Considering the furore around the 3ds launch I can actually see sales being dire both in Europe and the US whilst gamers wait for what seems like the inevitable price cut that will follow within 6 months. The more people who hold off on picking one up because of the anticipation of a price drop the more sonys hand will be forced into dropping the price faster and cheaper before the 3ds accelerates into an unbeatable lead. I think it's a great bit of kit but as sales in japan have showed with a global depression only the real hardcore gamers or those with far too much disposable income will even consider it at first. Fair play to all those who do get a launch model and I'm totally jealous but for quite a while I feel you're going to be in a sizable minority.
The iPad comparison was a very fair one too IMO as most of us now split our time up between a variety of interests and a format that caters to all of those is very desirable. Look at the success of smart phones for proof that your average Joe quite likes being able to surf the net, play a few games and stream the odd tv show/album on one convenient device. My iPad for me is a perfect tool for this as due to the large screen I can also use it for reading my quite big comic collection as well as all those other things. In fact for watching tv shows and reading books/comics I feel it's 10" screen is about as small as you can go and feel comfortable. I would never consider doing either of these things with my desire hd and the screen on that isn't far off the size of the vitas. Although saying that if it wasn't for the fact hat I got mine for a tonne with a monthly fee due to the 3G coverage I would still not have bought one at the 600-700 quid Mark that my 64GB would have cost me.
Only time will tell if the vita is a flop, relative success (like the PSP before it) or a runaway hit but at that price point all roads look like they lead to another easy win for Nintendo at the moment.
I'd still quite like a vita though if anyones feeling generous?
