Sony files patent for Kinect-style device

Camera would be used to create a "three-dimensional interactive gaming environment"

Sony may be planning to release its own Kinect-style product.

That's according to a patent filed by the company in late 2011 and spotted by Kotaku following its publication earlier this month.

Filed by Sony research and development wizard Dr. Richard Marks, who previously created EyeToy and PlayStation Move, it describes a "user-driven three-dimensional interactive gaming environment" created by plugging a camera into a PlayStation that could read player positioning and movement.

Marks previously described Kinect and EyeToy as "limited" in comparison to PlayStation Move, saying he was convinced that gamers - and games designers - can achieve more with a controller in their hands. If anything comes of this patent, we can probably expect it to have its own twist on the Kinect formula, then.
