Nintendo shutting Wii video service

Japanese ad-supported channel never made it to Europe

Nintendo of Japan has announced plans to kill off its Wii no Ma video service for good on April 30.

Launched in May 2009 with a range of movies, anime and other paid content from providers including Walt Disney and Warner Entertainment, the ad-supported video on demand channel was available to Wii owners and also accessible via DSi for portable viewing.

It offered both original programming and a space for partner companies to serve up promotional videos, and was initially planned for release outside of Japan.

The service has seen 4.49 million downloads and has over 8.11 million users, Andriasang reports.
