3DS required a hefty price cut only six months after launch to help drive sales, but Sony says a price drop for the just launched, £230 PS Vita is "not currently" on its radar.

"One benchmark I would draw is that it is round about half of the price-point of an entry-level tablet, and considerably less than a high-end smartphone. So, what's the appropriate point of reference for its price? "We need to wait and see, but we believe it's a step-change in performance and a step-change in capabilities compared to what people could do before."
Gara continued: "Picking up on the Nintendo example, it's not for us to comment on their performance, but I would say that the strength of our software has been demonstrated very well, and that was on our to-do list early last year: to launch with strong software and to make sure the supply of quality software was maintained through the year and beyond. So we hope to start better, and that agenda will continue."
PS Vita released at midnight last night in the West. We were at official London launch event and snapped a few pictures - have a look.

£197 at ASDA! At that price you cant complain. Game once again fail to price match this.
brookie_2001 on 22 Feb '12 said:
Don't blame Game for not price matching it because Asda will only keep that price for a short period before putting it back up.
I like how a price cut article appears on the launch of a new console haha.

If places like Amazon have been selling them for £30-40 under RRP with a memory card, I assume there have been some price cuts for wholesale. Either that or there are pretty big margins on them, and I expect it's the former.

Although I think the psp2 is expensive compared to current consoles I was thinking about them priced against tablets and you get an ok deal. If they could be loaded up with decent applications, you basically have a 5 inch tablet.
Only battery life lets it down on that front.

It'd be pretty stupid of Sony to admit that they could well drop the price in 6 months time, to be fair. Sales would dry up instantly if they did!

We'll see I guess. Don't think right now is a good tiem to launch though. We're in a "save cash, stay home, look for a job" period. So Sony releases the most expensive portable gaming console on the market

I-PADS sell loads for very simple reasons compared to the VITA.
For a start you dont pay 30-40 quid for i-pad games, most games are around the few quid mark a lot are below a quid and some are given away free from time to time.
I-PAD has a far better internet browser, its faster and can do more stuff than the one currently on the VITA
I-PAD's are great for business use ie for reps, salespeople, area managers etc etc, like anyone could use a vita for anything else other than sending pointless tweets, hell even musicians can use the i-pad apps for recording music and as a temp amp etc, some of that software is amazing.
So apart from APPLE taking the p**s on the price point of the I-PAD and hell even the 4GS i-phone they do a lot more non-games side wise than the vita does right now and will ever do.
Comparing them to each other though is retarded, different markets completely and priced accordingly. I want a VITA for sure but theres no way im paying 230 quid RRP for it plus the memory card which once again is a total joke just like the original psp ones at launch.
Now is a great time to buy a 3DS, the games are either here now or will be here inside the next 3-6 months, everything is looking good for Nintendo on this front, in about 6-8 months when the launch fever has died on its arse the VITA will see in this territory and that of America that a huge gap will happen in quality software release and it will stall, thus a price cut like every other new hardware has had over the years and thats when i will get one.
As of right now if you strip away the gimmicks and the quality screen you are left with a console that just plays handheld smaller versions of existing games, it brings nothing new to the market, im sure that will come and god i hope so for you early adopters and ultimately for little old me.
I got burnt with importing a JAP psp and a jap DS paid well over 200 notes for each and they sat in their boxes for ages until they were worth their purchase price, you will forgive me if i learn from the past.
Truth be told in late april when they finally release DISGAEA 3 The Return for the Vita thats when my patience will be tested, love those games it will kill me to not be able to play that bugger

I wasn't comparing them fella. I was merely pointing out that even though we are in a recession and as Imaduck pointed out supposed to be saving etc, people still splash out £500 on a pointless device. £500 on a tablet? Seriously? Regardless how anyone puts it, its an ipod enlarged. I love my iphone I really do but I wouldn't pay a extra £500 for a bigger one when I can just buy a much better laptop.

I'm voting with my wallet then, not getting anything from me until the games and console itself are lowered in price.
