Sony UK says Vita launch is 'very encouraging'

Stockists coming through with re-orders, firm has enough stock to satisfy demand

Sony Computer Entertainment UK managing director Fergal Gara has told CVG that the consumer response to PS Vita has been "very encouraging".

Speaking in a newly published interview following Vita's launch today, the exec said: "First of all, the excitement of a midnight console launch was great to see - it's my first time seeing that first-hand, on this side of the fence. It was fantastic to see that enthusiasm.

"We are in a new world, of course, where early sales don't only come from queuing at midnight, and there are a hell of a lot of pre-orders shipping today, which have been ordered either through retailers or online specialists, so judging the numbers at this stage is very hard. But people are coming through with re-orders, which is always exciting to see."

Gara also said the company has a comfortable amount of stock. "We've got enough to satisfy demand; it depends how big those re-orders are and how the week plays out. We're seeing encouraging signs, but it's very, very early."

Some PR pencil pushing suit from Sony tells us the launch has been "very encouraging"...what else did we expect? Also, I'm a videogame FAN not some numbers jockey, why would any self respecting videogame fan do likewise, its the experiences that count and NOT the charts, reason why the Dreamcast is still fondly remembered.

"3DS not even close"...really!? Listen, I'm as big a Nintendo fan as the next and yes, I picked up a 3DS at launch...traded it in 2 months later. Surprised then I should be defending the 3DS? Well, I traded mine because I already owned a DS Lite (still do, wont I reckon ever trade that) and the 3DS - when I purchased it - has limited software for what was an expensive piece of equipment, that and I was still spending more time re-visiting me original DS Lite. Sony's Vita however is for me a big fail in that it offers NOTHING different from what is available already on PS3 - a console which can still be purchased for less. The Vita - unlike the DSi/3DS - doesnt offer anything new, instead it aims to replicate what you have probably already played to death on the PS3, DSi/3DS games offer an experience very different to that of its bigger brother the Wii. THAT I believe is why Nintendo always win in the handheld game and why Sony, Sega and whoever never quite mange it...

Picked one up for my son and now seriously considering getting my own! Fantastic little machine. We also have a 3DS but this is just so much more capable (never use 3D, it gives me a headache).

I wish this was available in my country at a normal price.. Unfortunately it's WAY too expensive in Europe.
