'Questionable religious content' scuppers The Binding of Isaac 3DS release

Nintendo won't allow hit indie title to launch on its handheld

Action RPG shooter The Binding of Isaac won't release on 3DS due to what Nintendo has reportedly deemed to be "questionable religious content".

Super Meat Boy co-creator and Binding of Isaac maker Edmund McMillen said on Twitter: "After a long internal debate Nintendo has decided NOT to allow the Binding of Isaac on the 3ds. :(

"They were fine with the M rating and that content.. somehow," he added. "As many assumed the reasons were due to the games "questionable religious content". Thank GOD Steam exists!"

The indie title sees you take on the role of Isaac, a naked little boy cast into the network of cellars under his house after God commands his mother to kill him. Unlike in the Bible, no stay of execution awaits you: only level after level of top-down, randomly generated dungeon, populated by Isaac's monstrous former siblings.

Originally released on Steam in September of 2011, the well-received indie game - our chums at PC Gamer gave it an 83 review - has sold over 450,000 copies.
