As you may know, this week CVG's teamed up with Blizzard to give away a limited and precious store of 1000 Diablo III beta keys.
In short it's been an amazing few days, opening us up to a small squeak of love and a huge deluge of hate as thousands of disappointed readers and a few lucky winners competed to get their hands on the hottest gaming ticket in town.
People have pleaded, begged, whined, threatened, abused us, stalked us on email, Twitter and Facebook, and even phoned us up and told us to 'think of their starving children' (though how playing D3 would help that is beyond us).
We've had to shut down the original articles because the comment load has been simply too much, so we're reproducing the instructions again for you below, just in case you don't know the form by now.
Just an FYI, and to quash some of the more ridiculous rumours, yes we do actually have these keys, yes people do win them on Facebook and Twitter, and yes, a few have been given out to long-standing members of the site who we feel have made a lasting contribution. Just look around, plenty have posted when they've won.
And no, we're not doing this as a publicity stunt. The intention remains as it always has been, to give our readers a chance to play one of the best games around early - Blizzard's magnificent Diablo III
Trouble is there's almost infinite demand and very limited supply and in that situation, there's always going to be more disappointed people than happy ones.
To be scrupulously fair we've now made it work on a random basis, so that you when the clock counts down you hit the button and you have the same random chance as everybody else to win a key - it's the only way that really works. Of course you can also follow us on Twitter @CVG_UK for another chance. It's a lottery for sure, but better than no chance at all, huh?
It's a slim chance, but people do win. Don't believe us? There's a list of current winners below by CVG user name, and we'll keep publishing them here as we give them out. Winners have also commented here and on Facebook check them out.
Still, we've learned a lot and it's been kind of fun, in a masochistic, beat your face against the keyboard, feel the pain kind of way - and we now have the biggest, best and baddest ass beta key mechanism in the business.
And you know what? We're going to do it all again next month, not with Diablo but with something different... So watch this fricking space.

Diablo III beta key instructions
To access the beta you must be over 18 and have an active Battle.net account (further instructions below).
Here's how you can get one of the thousand keys in our possession:
1) Facebook - Every hour from 4pm until 11pm from today to Friday 2nd and Monday 5th to Friday 9th March, a set number of keys will be given away on our Facebook page. To stand a chance of winning, you'll need to be both a registered CVG member (sign up here) and a fan of our Facebook page.
2) Twitter - We'll also be giving away a number of keys via our CVG_UK Twitter account this week - these will be randomly posted and it's literally first come first served - grab that key, put it in your Battle.Net account and away you go. Fastest fingers first.
3) Some keys will be offered to long standing regular CVG members who feel have made a lasting contribution to the site through comments and forums and turning up to read us every single day. Check your PM box, there might be a pleasant surprise waiting.
4) Finally we're going to do some random skill based giveaways too, these might be caption competitions, trials of patience or simply telling us why you deserve one sooooo very much. We hope much hilarity will ensue.
And finally good luck! If you're lucky enough to win a key, count your lucky stars, brag to your mates, play Diablo III and give Blizzard your feedback.

2. Click on the "Account" button.
3. Select the "Add a Game" button.
4. Enter your Diablo III beta key and select the "Activate Game" button.
5. Verify your age.
6. Select Windows or Mac as your operating system to download the beta client.
7. Select "Run" when the installation .exe pop-up box appears.

You have to go via an app if you try to get a key via Facebook. This app requires you to login in using your CVG details. Hence how CVG knows which members have won.
Note: if any1 else wins, its a 15gig install.

As I try to get my beta key I did realize a lot of changes in the system which I think is great. I love the fact that you don't have to really rush on the clicking to have a chance to get a key. I also find brilliant the fact that the key giving is random, hence destroying the need for a bot to smash the button. The fact that you need a Facebook account to get a key, to me, is a good thing because it proves that people want to get a key and others can see how much the likes for the Facebook page goes up fast. I would like to say sorry if this is not posted in the right place but I wanted to say what I said somewhere and that is the only place I thought to say it. Almost all the time when i click the button right when it appears, i see at the bottom "X won the key 25 seconds ago". How can he win 25 seconds (an example) ago if the button JUST appeared? I checked my system clock and it's ok. I even tried a few times refreshing the page 25 seconds before the button appears, thinking the timer might bug out over time.
This also applies for the 30 second randomclick wait. After those 30 seconds go away, and i click instantly the button, i see "X won N seconds ago". I even tried with 2 different, very high speed and almost 0 lag, connections.

I understand the concept of a beta because I have participated in them before. It is not for anxious gamers like us to get a sneak-peek at the game, but rather to play the game extensively and give valuable feedback to the developers so they can make it better before launch. I can promise that if you would supply me with one of the 1000 beta keys I would do just that, play the beta to no end and give the feedback Blizzard is looking for. You guys are my last hope, as far as I can see for attaining a beta key, and it would make me one hell of a happy gamer if you did! I work hard so I can play hard, but this eliminates me from being able to participate in your Twitter or Facebook giveaways as I am coding during those times for the most part. This may not even be read by anyone at CVG, but if you do please keep me in mind and you would have enough good karma to last a lifetime.

I think a better way to give out these keys would've been the old-fashioned way. Like you used to do with MMO beta keys.
Just give them out in one or two big lumps. Button on the main page, click it, claim it.
This "20 keys per hour when 100k+ players are all trying to get them" is ridiculous. It's a competition of who has the fastest ping.
Now it's just dangling a carrot in front of us, causing bad will and disappointment every hour, every day. Just so you can gets loads of hits on your webpage, FB and twitter.

Hey m8, game is Awsome, I've been playing D2 for years and i have to say It's got the full feel of Diablo in it, everything i was looking for. I started off with a barb hes lvl 8 atm. barb was my first char i started with in D2 my favourite class, and seen Magic Find gear drop again nearly brought a tear to my eye lol.

Just a note -- The keys given away on Twitter may not work after awhile. Blizzard has been locking out keys that have been tried to be used a lot. Another site gave one away similarly, and it got locked after a lot of people tried to use it.

When they started this contest they gave you one chance every round and you had to be one of the fastest clickers. At least this time if you don't win, you get the opportunity for additional chances. This was a great idea. Woot!
However there is a perception bug which they may not be aware of. If, for example, 8 keys remain, I would expect the number available to get smaller each subsequent try assuming someone is winning a key each time. So if you see 8, 8, 8, 6, 5, 4, 4, 4, 4, 1, 1, 1 keys remaining etc..., each time you try, don't get angry. As a programmer, I can tell you that there probably is a winner every 30 sec, but the coders did not lock things down well enough to ensure every user receives an accurate update on the remaining key count. Maybe they will look into this problem... I could understand traffic being a problem later in the day, but not necessarily earlier on.

I have to say, whilst I was one of the lucky few to get a key, I'm incredibly disappointed by Diablo 3. Apart from being a prettier version of Diablo 2, I genuinely don't feel like the game has progressed 12 years to get to what I'm playing now. Hello, you mentioned in this post that there were certain ways of gaining an access key to this game. I will tell you why I think I deserve one. For one, I played Diablo 2 for seven years, creating god characters of every type possible from the 2 Hammerdins I had running on my bots to help people lvl, to my blizz sorcy or CL sorcy that I used for rushing people, to the smiter I used to solo ubers for all my friends to help them get torches. So my first point that I make is that I am a Diablo veteran and if for nothing else I deserve one for the amount of time I put into the games. The second point is that I spent 100 USD on the collectors edition because I am such a hardcore fan that when they told me it would come with a big pewter Diablo head with a soulstone USB flash drive containing diablo 2 and LOD that fit into the head, all I though was "That is what my desk is missing" rather than what I thought when I bought Skyrim (I got the regular) Which was just that having a dragon statue would be stupid. I sincerely hope I have swayed you to allow me to have a key, because the point I am at is desperation. At least the beta would tide me over until Blizzard finally decides to release the full game. It's my second day, second 7 hours run for a BETA key and the BETA Key RNG proves to be a total mess.
It seems like its not even an RNG, but rather "YES" or "NO", so If you are there even alone (it pretty much seemed like this my last attempt) you can be "lucky" enough to always get your "NO", ranther then rolling a dice with no competitors (meaning you are the winner even if you'll roll 1/6) or at least diminishing rivals...
For so much effort the system (type of RNG) does not seem motivating at all... =\

I joined this site for the d3 beta key giveaway and a lot of others probably did the same. Also All these people that are saying they won and its legit are accounts credited by the sites operators..... So in conclusion they actually just did this for publicity and nothing was really even given away. Thanks

I signed up when I heard about the Diablo 3 beta keys. I kinda liked the site, but to be honest, the contest was handled badly. It was just a gimmick to get traffic for your site, and ya know, I can understand that, but the way the contest was ran was completely unfair, and because of that, I'll be deleting my account here. This was a horrible fiasco, and it was a pretty dirty scheme, and the way it was handled was very unprofessional, and completely unfair. I hope more of your users leave because of this. No, not at all. I'm mad because the rules changed at least 3 different times, and the contest was NEVER fair. If I had a fair shot, I wouldn't be complaining at all. I'd be disappointed, but I just feel that the contest was unfairly conducted, that's all.

I was one of the lucky few to have won a key. All I have to say is thank you! I have maxed out every character and obtained almost all the achievements. My only critic with the game is that on normal it feels almost too easy. Health orbs drop way to often making life leech and strategy almost useless as least within Act 1. On positive notes, the game feels so similar to the other titles yet so different. I was never a fan of a barbarian or the wizard but they have changed the way these characters play and I am now a big fan of both. thanks again for a beta key. Keep up the great work CVG!!!!
