Deus Ex gameplay director "truly sorry" about the boss fights

"We should have put more effort into them"

Francois Lapikas, gameplay director of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, has apologised for the notoriously difficult boss fights in Eidos Montreal's reimagining of the PC classic.

Speaking in a post-mortem of the game at GDC (via Game Informer), Lapikas admitted the development team should have spent more time and effort on them, and promised to do so "next time."

"[The boss fights] were a big part of the game, and we should have put more effort into them. I'm truly sorry about that. Next time we're gonna think about it more," he said.

According to the director, the boss fights were treated as a "thing to break up the pacing more than a way to test the player's skill", which is what most games traditionally design boss battles to do.

Lapikas admitted "play tests did flag the boss fights as a problem" but claimed "they didn't flag the severity of it" and the team believed the weapons and ammo found in each battle would compensate for the difficulty level.
