Miyamoto wishes he'd invented Angry Birds

Design legend heaps praise on Rovio's game, but says it would have been better on DS

Nintendo star Shigeru Miyamoto is quite the fan of Angry Birds. In fact, the Mario, Donkey Kong and Zelda creator wishes he'd come up with the idea before Rovio.

Asked by HookShot which mobile games he's been enjoying recently, he said: "There aren't many games that I've played recently that have been truly convincing to me. But that said, I have very much enjoyed Angry Birds, especially the way in which it combines traditional and new game elements in exciting ways.

"Angry Birds is a very simple idea but it's one of those games that I immediately appreciated when I first started playing, before wishing that I had been the one to come up with the idea first. I mean, obviously I want to be the one creating the most convincing, surprising game ideas."

Miyamoto went on to single out Angry Birds' "excellent" and intuitive control scheme and interface, before cheekily adding: "Obviously, if the developer had created the game for Nintendo DS the controls would have been even better, but what can you do?"

Miyamoto's clearly not alone in his admiration for the bird-flinging series. Rovio's latest release, Angry Birds Space, was downloaded over ten million times in less than three days.

The Finnish company's chief marketing officer, Peter Vesterbacka, said in March that the series could reach a billion downloads across all platforms in the next few months, and two billion by the end of 2012.
