Publisher to ditch action games to focus on racers

Codemasters is set to ditch action titles like Operation Flashpoint to focus solely on racing games, according to MCV.

The UK publisher will release its latest F1, Grid and DiRT games under the company's new publishing label, Codemasters Racing, starting with DiRT Showdown on May 25.

The decision follows the disappointing performances of its most recent shooters, Operation Flashpoint: Red River and Bodycount.

"We have kept our reputation for delivering best-in-class racing games," communications chief Rich Eddy told MCV. "And best-in-class racing games is now our razor focus going forward.

"In racing, we are No.2 in Europe and that's not good enough. We want to take racing games across multiple platforms and genres. So that players can play anytime, anywhere and on any device. Racing is our DNA, it is our heritage, it is our specialisation and it is our absolute focus going forward."

The publisher said more bluntly in a Eurogamer interview: "The focus is an exclusive one, there are no other genre properties in development at this time; racing is everything."

Codemasters has also announced Racenet, a new online hub that will bring together its racing game communities. Racenet will provide players with a Driver Profile that will work across all future Codemasters racing titles, it says, and users will be able to take part in additional in-game events and win extra content.

Racenet will launch alongside the Dirt Showdown demo on May 1.
