PES senior producer Naoya Hatsumi has ruled out a version of the Konami footy sim for PS Vita this year.
Speaking at a press event where CVG was provided a hands-on PES 2013 preview, Hatsumi confirmed that Sony's new handheld was not going to host a 2012 edition of the game.
However he said that Konami's PES development team isn't ignoring Sony's handheld and suggested that experiments were underway for a Vita game.
"There will not be a Vita version of PES this year," Hatsumi said.
"But we are not saying that we are ignoring PS Vita - that's not the case. We have been exploring the possibility of having a PS Vita version. We keep experimenting."
Hatsumi's view was that a future growth strategy for the PES series could be through capturing the surging popularity of smartphone and tablet devices.
"We are looking at far more potentials," he said.
"Not just thinking of consoles like PS3, Xbox 360 and PS Vita, but looking at much wider potential users. Because of the change of lifestyle, for example users now use iPad and iPhone, they can play football games if they want to. That means we're not just limited to console users.
"Wider users now have potential access to video games. That's what we want to do; we would like as many potential users as possible to play Pro Evolution Soccer.
"So we are not concentrating only on consoles. Of course we are not going to rule out Vita, but our argument is to try and provide for much wider potential users."
