A brand new Gears of War game will be revealed at Microsoft's E3 press conference on Monday, US mag Game Informer has confirmed.
The mysterious title's first artwork shows a shadowy character bound in handcuffs, suggesting that the new instalment could in fact take the form of a prequel, detailing series protagonist Marcus Fenix's early days and eventual imprisonment.
A Gears prequel has of course been rumoured for some time, with reports late last year suggesting that Bulletstorm developer People Can Fly is at the helm, and a whole new trilogy of games planned for release. Given the studio's history it wouldn't be a stretch to speculate the game could be be a first-person shooter.
In Gears of War lore Marcus abandoned his post to rescue his father during the Battle of Ephyra, he was court-martialed for cowardice and failure to obey orders and punished with a 40 years of imprisonment in Jacinto Maximum Security Prison. However, just four years into his time he was released by Dom to battle the Locust.
Although Marcus' clashes with other prison inmates is well documented in the lore it may be that he also conducted some secret missions for the COG military, which this game will explore. Or it might just be a new burly, gruff-voiced character taking the leading role this time.
GI confirms the title will be unveiled in full on Monday - the same day as Microsoft's E3 press conference. Stay tuned.
