05. Star Wars 1313
Let's be honest, Star Wars 1313 looks derivative. Pretty, but derivative. But the idea of a Star Wars game targeted at a mature audience has us jittering with anticipation. In 1313 you play a bounty hunter delving into the criminal underworld in Coruscant. Maybe it will just be another generic Star Wars themed third-person shooter, or maybe it'll be the Star Wars game we've all been desperately hoping for. Probably the first one if we're realistic, but this trailer is still very cool.
04. Final Fantasy Tech Demo
We hate Square Enix for attaching the Final Fantasy name to this CGI tech demo of its new engine but not actually confirming if they're running with it. We're sold on this world of magic versus guns, it feels like a more traditional Final Fantasy setup instead of the kids-with-a-destiny stories the games have adopted of late. We're really hoping this become a full game. Oh, it looks nice too or whatever.
03. Beyond: Two Souls
"Beyond will be unlike anything you've experienced before, it will be emotional, mature and unique," said David Cage at Sony's E3 press conference. For his next game the Heavy Rain writer is going to explore life and death, as well as what lies in between and beyond. Quantic Dreams looks like its betting big with Beyond, and it's scooped up some major Hollywood talent to star in the game. It's all very exciting but we're not exactly sure of what's going on in the trailer, and we have a feeling that won't change until we've got it in our hands.
02. Watch Dogs
Ubisoft's Watch Dogs stole the show this year, the rapturous response it got was partly because it looked stunning and teased exciting new ways to get up to no good in an open-world game, but also because it was a brand new, never-been-seen-before property that somehow wasn't leaked before the show. Watch Dogs was a life raft in a sea of samey sequels. Unfortunately the gameplay it presented was too insubstantial to land it at the top of our list, that accolade goes to...
01. The Last of Us
After years of Crash Bandicoot, Jak and Uncharted the last thing we expected from a Naughty Dog game was flippant profanity and main characters that brutalise begging enemies. The Last of Us' gameplay trailer perfectly encapsulates what the game is: a brutal, desperate, intense struggle for survival where the odds are stacked against you. We think it was the best video from this years show. Don't miss it.
